SUMMARY:Talk: “Fused: Pop Ideas + Classical Sounds”
DESCRIPTION:Meghan Bennett\, flute – Artist-in-Residence \n\nArtistry is elusive and defies definition. Still\, the presence of artistry is unmistakable. Artists fuse high-level craftsmanship with humanity and honesty. This process of connecting one’s craft with one’s inner self differs greatly depending on the artist; however\, honesty and vulnerability remain a constant in the process. By viewing documentaries and interviews featuring Nina Simone\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Beyoncé\, Lady Gaga\, Céline Dion\, Quincy Jones and Audra McDonald\, we take a relevant and creative look into the connections between music\, thought\, feeling and society\, and examine the meaning of the word “artist.” Delving into the personal perspective of varied popular artists will serve as the impetus for self-reflection regarding our individual\, deliberate participation in both the world of arts and the world at large. \n\nRecent presentations include Oberlin Conservatory\, The University of Texas at Austin\, Baylor University\, University of Virginia Flute Forum and the New Jersey Flute Fair. \nAbout Meghan \nMeghan Bennett recently began as Assistant Music Professor and Director of Woodwind Studies at New York University in fall of 2023. \nShe was awarded top prizes in the South Carolina Flute Society Young Artist Competition\, the Morning\, Afternoon and Eau Claire Music Club Competition\, the Atlanta Flute Club Young Artist Competition\, Flute Society of Kentucky Young Artist Competition\, and the Greater Philadelphia Flute Society Collegiate Young Artist Competition. SUMMARY:Trestles
DESCRIPTION:Mom Cars\, Trestles\, Career\nWoman Trestles is an indie rock project from Santa Cruz\, California. The band is comprised of Hunter Kelly (vocals/guitar)\, Jackson Jones (guitar/vocals)\, Sophia Wall (bass/vocals)\, and Malena Clark (drums/vocals). Formed out of the ashes of Jones and Kelly’s garage rock project Speedwalker\, Trestles developed a fun surf inspired indie rock sound with the release of their debut single Dwell. In 2021\, the band began a rampant series of D.I.Y. shows in the Santa Cruz circuit becoming a common name at UCSC parties and house shows. In 2022\, Trestles started releasing new music with the full band leading up to the release of their first LP. The single Rip Curl Sweatshirt\, became their biggest hit through Spotify playlist features. Through this the band built a loyal local following. Described as “one of the most exciting things to come from the scene\,” the band has become a Santa Cruz mainstay at venues like The Catalyst and Urbani’s Cellar. Trestles first full length album Halfway Up The Hill was released in December of 2022. The 10 track debut release consists of self produced tracks about “being young and dumb.” The band then grew their following through playing support sets for Destroy Boys\, Scowl\, and Movements. In 2023\, the band took the album on the road touring college towns in California. The band has since taken a break from performing to write more material they hope to release in the form of a follow-up LP in the coming year.

SUMMARY:Valencia Baryton Project
DESCRIPTION:Valencia Baryton Project\nMatthew Baker\, baryton\nBrett Wallfish\, viola\nAlex Friedhoff\, cello \n\nA string trio with four instruments? A harpsichord hiding behind the cello? The Valencia Baryton Project has dedicated itself to the performance of music written for an ancient and little-known instrument\, the baryton. A cross between the viola da gamba and lirone\, with 10 resonating and plucked strings down the back of the instrument\, the baryton gives the traditional string trio an entirely new dimension. \n\nProgram \nFranz Joseph Haydn: Baryton Trio No. 67 in G Major \nJohn Pickup: Prelude 1 (2021) \nHaydn: Baryton Trio No. 113 in D Major \nHaydn: Baryton Trio No. 87 in A Minor \nSteve Zink: The River (2020) \nHaydn: Baryton Trio No. 71 in A Major \nFree\, a Shinkoskey Noon Concert \nhttps://youtu.be/cvXoWcH8fFw?si=fRxi2jHTL9v3droz \nAbout the Valencia Baryton Project \nThe Valencia Baryton Project was formed by colleagues from the opera of the Palau de les Arts (Barcelona\, Spain) and the Orchestre Nationale Montpellier with the vision of performing the nearly 160 works written by Franz Joseph Haydn as well as compositions by other composers\, both modern and classical. At the heart of the ensemble is the traditional formation in trio–baryton\, viola\, and violoncello–for which Haydn wrote 123 works of outstanding beauty during his time as the court composer for the Prince Esterhazy of Austria.

SUMMARY:Silkroad Ensemble with Rhiannon Giddens
DESCRIPTION:Silkroad’s newest initiative\, American Railroad\, illuminates the impact of African American\, Chinese\, Irish and Native American communities on the creation of the Transcontinental Railroad and America’s Westward Expansion.\n  \nThe railroad was to North America what the Silk Road was to China\, the Far East and Europe. These cultural intersections reveal a common thread despite their varied origins and remind us of the intricately rich American story. Founded by Yo-Yo Ma\, and now under the leadership of Rhiannon Giddens\, the 20+ member Silkroad Ensemble works to inspire collaboration in innovative ways that add more equity and justice into the world through the power of the arts.
