SUMMARY:Lehmann Duo
DESCRIPTION:Lehmann Duo\nRobert Lehmann\, violin\nKimberly Lehmann\, viola \nProgram\nManuel Ponce: Sonata for Violin and Viola \nOther selections to be announced. \nFree\, a Shinkoskey Noon Concert \nAbout the Lehmann Duo\nPlaying chamber music with friends is one of life’s greatest pleasures. The give and take\, the exchange of opinions\, and the search for an end result that is more than the sum of its parts are all rewards for the hard work and sometimes chaotic and quarrelsome rehearsal process. Playing chamber music with your spouse intensifies the experience in a very singular way. Although the rehearsal process may require perhaps a greater deal of diplomacy\, tact\, and understanding than working with ‘colleagues’\, the payoff is also greater because you know that your partner\, in this case\, has your back ’til death do us part’! \nWe started our duo partnership long before we married. While in residence at the Heidelberg Opera Festival in Germany\, we would often busk on the streets for extra spending money. Beer and bratkartoffeln for one\, ice cream for the other! After we married we often found ourselves playing through a great deal of duos we inherited from Robert’s grandparents (amateur musicians themselves). Between violin/violin and violin/viola combinations\, we spent many hours enjoying our unique pastime. \nOver the years we have added to our repertory and enjoy creating programs that balance established violin/viola duos with new works and creative arrangements of everything from Bach’s two-part inventions to tangos. The Lehmanns have performed duo programs all over New England\, have performed the Mozart Sinfonia Concertante with various  orchestras and have concertized in Mexico and Europe. Upcoming plans include performances at the American Church in Paris and Assisi Performing Arts in Assisi\, Italy. \nOriginally from Sioux Falls\, SD\, Kimberly received degrees from the University of Minnesota and the Eastman School of Music. She has been a member of the Colorado Springs Symphony and the Boston Philharmonic and is now a member of the Portland Symphony Orchestra.  She is Artist Faculty at the USM School of Music and is also on the faculty of the Portland Conservatory as well as maintaining a private studio. \nRobert studied at the Conservatorio Nacional de Musica in his native Mexico City\, and then received degrees from the University of the Pacific\, the Eastman School and Boston University. He is Director of Orchestral Activities and String Studies at the USM School of Music where he conducts the Southern Maine Symphony\, Portland Youth Symphony and is Music Director of the North Shore Philharmonic and White Mountain Bach Festival. \n

SUMMARY:Taproot New Music Festival: Pendulum Music
DESCRIPTION:Pendulum Music\nSaturday\, February 10\n1 PM\nManetti Shrem Museum Events Plaza \nAs part of the campus’ Taproot New Music Festival\, Steve Reich’s Pendulum Music (1968) will be performed on the Events Plaza by Alysa Banks (B.A.\, human development\, with minors in music and sociology ’21)\, Diego Gordon\, Alyssa Melendez and Ruby Walker. \nPendulum Music makes use of multiple microphones swinging\, pendulum-style\, over loudspeakers. Featuring dramatic squawks of feedback\, the piece concludes when the inertia of the swinging microphones naturally come to rest. Sharp rhythms gradually wind down into a sustained drone. The composer wrote of the piece\, “If it’s done right\, it’s kind of funny.” \nThe Taproot New Music Festival brings together a diverse group of composers and performers\, both local and visiting\, and gives them the chance to hear new work\, and to make lasting connections. Actively inclusive and participatory\, Taproot broadcasts a unique vision of how to sustain a musical community. \nA full schedule of festival events is available on the Taproot webpage. \nTaproot is presented by the UC Davis Department of Music. Co-sponsored by the Manetti Shrem Museum

SUMMARY:Cory Wong featuring Monica Martin
DESCRIPTION:Music motivates at the most primal level.\nStraight out of Minneapolis\, Grammy-nominated American guitarist\, bassist\, songwriter\, podcast-host\, and producer Cory Wong positioned himself as music’s answer to motivational speakers like Tony Robbins since emerging in 2011. Head-spinning rhythm-guitar wizardry\, technical ebullience\, laugh-out-loud jokes\, and radiance on stage established him as both a sought-after collaborator and celebrated solo artist alike. \n“I try to feature the guitar\, but I don’t force myself into being the star of every song\,” he says. “The instrument plays an appropriate role. It’s not all flash. I’m bringing rhythm to the forefront where it’s not so shreddy. I refer to it as ‘Covert chops.’ I’m doing things that are sneakily hard\, but they lay in the cut. I allow the song to breathe and present myself as more of a composer rather than a guitar player.” \nIn the end\, Cory transmits joy in its purest form through the guitar. ”I want people to experience instrumental music in a different way. This is hype. It’s more than just guitar.”
