SUMMARY:Choruses of UC Davis: “Sorrow and Joy: An American Story”
DESCRIPTION:featuring the UC Davis Concert Band\nPete Nowlen\, director \nand Rollo Dilworth\, visiting composer \n\nIf the American Dream includes hope of a better life in a promised land\, then the story we tell must also acknowledge that dream has not always been equally available to all Americans. This concert gives us both sentiments of this “American Story.” \nRollo Dilworth set his choral and wind ensemble work “Weather” to the poem of the same name by Claudia Rankine. “Weather” (the poem) appeared in the New York Times Magazine shortly after the murder of George Floyd in 2020. It  captured in a few pointed phrases the pain of the pandemic and of America’s racial conflicts. Using American-born musical traditions\, including the Blues\, Rollo Dilworth juxtaposes Rankine’s words against a musical fabric\, which challenges us to accept this part of our American story\, and in time weather that challenge. \nAndré Thomas\, a composer known around the world for his spirituals\, wrote his “Mass of Love and Joy” (filled with moving and joyous spirituals) in 2018 upon his own retirement\, and which concludes and lifts up this choral concert. Thomas says of his work\, “anyone can relate to spirituals. Everyone goes through trials and everyone looks for comfort.” \n\nProgram\nChamber Singers \nNorman Dello Joio: A Jubilant Song \nSamuel Barber: “Anthony O’Daly” from Reincarnations \nWilliam L. Dawson: Soon-Ah-Will Be Done \nConcert Band \nSelections to be announced. \n— Intermission — \nCombined Choruses \nRollo Dilworth: Weather\nwith the UC Davis Concert Band\nand Shinae Kim\, piano \n“Historically\, the arts have always fulfilled the dual roles of responding to change while at the same time creating change. Claudia Rankine’s poem\, Weather\, is a poem that gives voice to the voiceless\, especially those who have been and continue to be marginalized because of difference. It responds to and reflects realities that are both culturally specific and humanly universal. Claudia Rankine challenges all of us (no matter your background or lived experience) to know better\, to do better\, to take action\, and to become agents of social justice and social change.” \n—Rollo Dilworth \nAndré Thomas: Mass of Love and Joy \n$12 Students and Children\, $24 Adults (Open Seating) \n

SUMMARY:Davis Odd Fellows Thursday Live!
DESCRIPTION:Davis Odd Fellows Thursday Live! returns on June 6th with singer songwriter Maurice Tani. \nThe Odd Fellows Hall is at 415 2nd St. in downtown Davis. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. All ages are welcome. Thursday Live! shows are free\, but donations are encouraged to support the musicians. \nWe are so proud and thankful for music lovers in our community who continue to keep live music alive and thriving. The Davis Odd Fellows Music Committee is proud to be a part of that effort! \nSan Francisco’s Maurice Tani has been a fixture on the local alt-country scene for more than a decade with his band 77 El Deora\, and previously sang and played guitar for the seminal Motown-style party bands Zasu Pitts Memorial Orchestra and Big Bang Beat. The San Francisco Chronicle has praised his “twangy modern country sound” and called his songs “wry yet romantic\, tender but aggressive.” \nKnown for his agile guitar style and expressive singing\, Maurice Tani’s flavor of Americana is a broad-spectrum tincture of influences to cure the wide range of ills his fertile imagination conjures. While rooted (at times distantly) in country music\, his writing is centered on an urban-western perspective. Short musical narratives of life on the left coast. A sort of cinema for the blind. No one blends Americana\, Blues and Country quite like Tani. \n“I was blown away! Maurice Tani writes songs that sound at once familiar\, ethereal\, and beautiful. A songwriter’s songwriter with recurring themes of his own life experiences.” – Robert Sproul\, No Depression Magazine \nFor more information\, or to be put on the email list\, contact Juelie Roggli at juelrog@gmail.com
