DESCRIPTION:This community workshop provides an introduction to the art of attending live music performances\, with a focus on classical concerts. The content includes discussions on symphonic form and movements\, and an in-depth look at the composers and pieces featured in the performance. The workshop culminates in a live concert experience\, allowing participants to apply their knowledge in a real-world setting. \nDay 1 (6 Feb 4-5 pm) is for school-age participants only and will focus on concert etiquette and roles such as ticket takers\, ushers\, audience members\, musicians and performers\, conductor\, and concessions. \nDay 2 (7 Feb 4-5pm) for children and adults covers the structure of symphonies\, and what to expect from each movement. \nDay 3 (8 Feb 4-5pm) for children and adults covers the historical and cultural context of the music they will hear at the concert selected for that session. \nOur group concert is Russian Masters: Prokofiev and Stravinsky on February 8 at 7:30pm SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center Sacramento \nThis community workshop is ideal for anyone new to classical music or looking to enhance their appreciation of live performances\, especially in a group setting. \n

DESCRIPTION:Valente Lecture: Jayson Beaster-Jones\, “Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Bollywood’s Rock Band Aesthetic” \nThe soundtrack to the film Dil Chahta Hai (2001) was arguably the first hit soundtrack in Bollywood created by a rock band. In this presentation\, Prof. Beaster-Jones illustrates how the collaborative approach for this Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy soundtrack generated momentum for a new kind of Indian film song. \nHe highlights the changing tastes of India’s urban youth audiences in the twenty-first century and shows how Dil Chahta Hai paved the way for the rock and EDM-oriented compositions of Hindi-language cinema that came to dominate the first decades of the 21st century. This influence\, he argues\, makes Dil Chahta Hai among the most influential soundtracks in Indian cinematic history. \nBeaster-Jones is a professor of music in the Global Arts Studies Program at UC Merced. He is author of three books\, a co-edited volume\, and numerous articles; his research focuses upon the popular music and media industries of India\, with a particular emphasis on the Hindi film industry and linguistic/semiotic approaches to musical/social analysis. He is currently co-editing the Routledge Handbook of Cinemas of South Asia (with Ajay Gehlawat) and the Oxford Handbook of Music Industry Studies (with Kaleb Goldschmitt). His recent research centers upon the relationships between music\, autobiographical memory\, and aging. \n

Shinkoskey Series of Noon Concert Endowment and the Al McNeil Fund for Non-Western Music. \nAbout the Duo\nIn the wake of their families’ flight from Afghanistan following the Soviet-Afghan War of the 1980s\, these master musicians perfected their art in the traditional ustâd-shâgird apprenticeship as disciples of the Ustad Zakir Hussain and Ustad Mohammed Omar. Nader has toured extensively with the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Stanley Clarke and appeared on Broadway in The Kite Runner. The duo performed on a Smithsonian Folkways recording series featuring the music of Afghanistan and Central Asia\, sponsored by Aga Khan Music. \nThe duo aims for their music to act as a powerful reminder of the resilience and importance of preserving cultural heritage. \n

Set to wide-ranging musical styles\, Chris’ lyrics explore the joys and sorrows of family life with energy\, humor and poignancy. \nChris loves the support and enthusiasm that characterizes each and every Village Homes Performer’s Circle\, and is looking forward to showcasing a few tunes from the album along with some classic folk songs (in the key of H for Hootenanny!) because he believes that communal singing heals and inspires us. \nThe Village Homes Performers’ Circle is a free event that welcomes performers of all levels as well as audience members who simply come to enjoy the performances. No tickets or reservations are required. It is held the fourth Tuesday of each month\, except December. \nThe event begins with an open mike from 7:00 to 8:15 pm and concludes with the featured performance from 8:30 to 9 pm.
