DESCRIPTION:Raven Chacon is a composer\, performer\, and installation artist born at Fort Defiance\, Navajo Nation. A recording artist over the span of 24 years\, Chacon has appeared on over eighty releases on national and international labels. He has exhibited\, performed\, or had works performed at LACMA\, The Whitney Biennial\, Borealis Festival\, SITE Santa Fe\, Swiss Institute Contemporary Art New York\, and more. As an educator\, Chacon is the senior composer mentor for the Native American Composer Apprentice Project (NACAP). In 2022\, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Music for his composition Voiceless Mass\, and in 2023 was awarded the MacArthur Fellowship. \nChacon is the winter quarter spotlight artist in The California Studio: Manetti Shrem Artist Residencies. \nArtist talk: Thursday\, Feb. 5\, 2026\, Ann E. Pitzer Center. This artist talk is made possible with additional support from the William E. Valente Endowment. \nOn Friday\, Feb. 6\, 2026\, the Gorman Museum of Native American Art will host a student ensemble from the Department of Music performing Chacon’s American Ledger No. 1 in the Gorman courtyard. The piece is about 20 minutes and begins at 4 p.m. In case of inclement weather\, the performance will be held in the Ann E. Pitzer Center. \nOrganized by The California Studio: Manetti Shrem Artist Residences in the Maria Manetti Shrem Art Studio Program.

DESCRIPTION:The Davis Odd Fellows Hall is located at 415 2nd St. in downtown Davis. Doors open at 7PM. The show starts at 7:30PM. Our shows are donation only with all donations going to the musicians. Please donate generously. \nBroken Compass Bluegrass emerged in 2021 and quickly gained recognition for their tight arrangements\, tasteful picking\, and standout songwriting. Hailing from Northern California\, the band features Kyle Ledson\, Django Ruckrich\, Mei Lin Heirendt\, and Sam Jacobs. Though young in years\, each member is a seasoned performer\, accomplished multi-instrumentalist\, and prolific songwriter. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Gorman Museum of Native American Art\, music students in the Department of Music will perform Chacon’s American Ledger No. 1 (2018) in the courtyard between the Gorman Museum and the Della Davidson Dance Studio. \nAmerican Ledger No. 1 is a narrative score for performance\, telling the creation story of the founding of the United States of America. In chronological descending order\, moments of contact\, enactment of laws\, events of violence\, the building of cities\, and erasure of land and worldview are mediated through graphic notation\, and realized by sustaining and percussive instruments\, coins\, axe and wood\, a police whistle\, and a match. \nAbout the Artist\nRaven Chacon is a composer\, performer\, and installation artist born at Fort Defiance\, Navajo Nation. DESCRIPTION:Canta\, Violino! Is an instrumental Brazilian trio featuring original Brazilian choro and samba. The trio brings together several award-winning virtuosos: U.S. violinist Andrew Finn Magill\, Brazilian percussionist Clarice Cast and Brazilian 7-string guitarist Nando Duarte. \nChoro was the first popular Brazilian music\, emerging in the 1870s\, and is the precursor to samba\, bossanova and modern popular Brazilian music. Renowned for its virtuosic musicianship and diverse rhythmic palette\, it is one of the most exciting instrumental genres on the planet. Andrew Finn Magill who has been featured on NPR and PBS\, moved to Brazil in 2014 to immerse himself in Brazilian choro music. Magill was signed to Ropeadope Records in 2018 for his original Brazilian music project. He followed up that release in 2021 with the sequel Festa! Says legendary Brazilian percussionist Airto Moreira (Miles Davis\, Chick Corea\, etc): “He can fool you into thinking he is from Brazil!” \nClarice Cast is a Grammy-nominated multi percussionist from São Paulo\, Brazil. She earned a Bachelor of Music from Northern Illinois University and a Masters in World Percussion from the California Institute of the Arts. She currently teaches World Percussion at College of the Canyons is an active performer\, recording artist\, and composer in Los Angeles\, CA and is a regular clinician at colleges\, universities\, and percussion festivals\, including the Percussive Arts Society International Convention\, California Brazil Camp\, and Choro Camp New England. She is heavily influenced by her native Brazilian culture\, and it has been her driving force to learn\, perform\, write\, and teach these styles. Clarice proudly endorses Contemporânea Musical\, Tycoon Percussion Instruments\, TRX Cymbals\, and Ahead Armor Cases. \nLos Angeles-based composer and seven-string guitarist Nando Duarte is celebrated for his extensive work in film\, advertising\, and sound design\, contributing to projects for major brands like Taco Bell and HBO\, and earning multiple awards for his scoring and arrangements. He has performed and recorded with numerous acclaimed artists\, including H.E.R.\, Melody Gardot\, Empire of the Sun\, and many Brazilian legends such as Gal Costa and Elza Soares\, for whom he served as Musical Director.

DESCRIPTION:Rose Hegele\, soprano\nSakurako Kanemitsu\, piano\nfeaturing paintings by Peter London\nand music by Ryan Suleiman (Ph.D. music ‘20) \nAbout the Artists\nBoston-based pianist Sakurako Kanemitsu is a colorful and creative interpreter of music ranging from the established classical repertoire to the music of our time. She began her studies at the age of five in Tokyo\, Japan\, and has since performed as soloist and a chamber pianist in Italy\, Germany\, and the United States. Recent projects include a collaboration with Nightingale Vocal Ensemble on Andrew List’s Journey of Seasons\, duo concerts with acclaimed soprano Rose Hegele. She also recently took part in a residency at UC Davis with award-winning choreographer Jacob Gutiérrez-Montoya and cellist Michael Dahlberg in which they created new works with composition students at UC Davis. Sakurako earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano performance from the Sacramento State School of Music\, where she worked as a teaching assistant and administrative assistant for the School of Music’s Piano Series. Her previous teachers include Steinway Artists Richard Cionco\, Kirsten Smith\, Natsuki Fukasawa\, and Tanya Gabrielian. Sakurako recently completed her Graduate Performance Diploma at the Longy School of Music of Bard College in Cambridge\, Massachusetts\, as the Barbara Roth Donaldson Scholar where she studied with Grammy-nominated and acclaimed pianist Andrius Žlabys. \nPeter London is Chancellor and Professor of Art\, emeritus\, of the University of Massachusetts\, Dartmouth. He has exhibited his paintings from 1960 to the present nationally and internationally in galleries and museums in New York City\, Boston\, Montreal\, Baltimore\, Davis\, Woodland\, Sacramento\, and his work is included in many public and private collections\, including at Columbia University\, the Maryland Institute’s College of Art\, University of Massachusetts\, Musée d’art contemporaine\, and Concordia University in Montreal. \nPeter has authored several books on art and the creative processes\, No More Secondhand Art\, Drawing Closer to Nature\, Step Outside; Community Based Art Education\, and a forthcoming publication\, “On The Practice of Art.” He has also published many professional articles on art and its teaching\, founded and edited several journals on the same\, including: Artizein\, a journal devoted to alternative voices and views in the the teaching of the arts; Concerning the Spiritual in Art Education; and Exemplary Art Curriculum\, published by the National Art Education Association. In addition to his university teaching where he was the founding chair of the Art Education Department\, he has taught and lectured in universities and arts centers across North and South America\, Europe\, Israel\, and Japan. \nIn his recent work\, London explores the soulful dimension: “Everybody talks about the soul but no one seems to have ever seen the soul\, and so I thought that might be a good thing to do; to investigate the look of the soul of things . . . to explore what happens to me—through my artwork\, when I go into the world—more exactly\, go into my studio\, thinking about\, ‘If indeed everything does have a soulful dimension\, what might that appear as to me?’” \nRyan Suleiman was born to Lebanese and midwestern parents in Sacramento\, California. His music engages with dreaming\, the natural world\, and the understated beauty of everyday life. His one-act chamber opera\, Moon\, Bride\, Dogs\, was described by the San Francisco Chronicle as “a gem” with “an aesthetic that is at once so strange and so accessible.” While his artistic interests vary\, he seeks ways of conveying the simultaneity of beauty and dread that characterizes our times. To this end\, he is currently working on a portrait concert in collaboration with The Fourth Wall Ensemble called Symbiosis\, which embraces the connection between theatricality and classical music. This project\, which also includes a new work\, was premiered at Boston Conservatory at Berklee in Spring 2025. \nOther recent projects include an art song for soprano Rose Hegele\, and an opera called The School for Girls Who Lost Everything in the Fire\, with writer Cristina Fríes (M.F.A. creative writing ‘19)\, which was developed with the support of West Edge Opera. Ryan completed his Ph.D. at UC Davis and his bachelor’s degree at the Sacramento State School of Music. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Berklee College of Music and has held teaching positions at Sacramento State and UC Davis. He also teaches composition privately. DESCRIPTION:Umbria Jazz Feast — a Documentary Film PREMIERE\nDirected by Alberto Guerri (Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia / National Film School\, Rome\, Italy) and\nProfessor Pierpaolo Polzonetti (UC Davis) \nAbout the “Umbria Jazz Feast”:\nThe purpose of this study is to document the cross-fertilization of global African-rooted American music and Italian art and cuisine\, as experienced by people of different backgrounds and from different countries. The study will focus on the trans-cultural process of global cross-fertilization defined by Fabienne Darling-Wolf as ‘glocamalgamation’. The primary outcome will be the production of a documentary film with videographer Alberto Guerri of the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome. The academic part of the project will be developed in collaboration with ethnomusicologists Marco Lutzu (University of Cagliari) and Giovanni Giuriati (University of Rome La Sapienza and Intercultural Institute of Comparative Music Studies IISMC of the Cini Foundation of Venice).
