SUMMARY:Stephen Giannetti: All In
DESCRIPTION:Stephen Giannetti: All In  \nExhibit: December 13\, 2024 – February 2\, 2025 \nReception: Friday\, December 13\, 6 – 9 PM (Free) \nArtist Talk: Saturday\, January 18\, 3 – 4:30 PM (Free\, suggested donation $10) \n  \nStephen Giannetti has explored the grid and the circle in various media over his 30-year career. Early in his career\, he pioneered a new mode of approaching the modernist grid. By painting three primary and three secondary colors in a specific pattern to define a set of same-sized circles\, Giannetti sought to create an engaging visual experience\, where the act of seeing color is primary. For the past 15 years\, Giannetti has adapted his method of hand-painting with traditional oil paint to the more contemporary application of acrylic spray paint. Using poker chips as a stencil for layering spray paint\, he creates an active space where colors mix\, and shapes fade in and out of view. During the pandemic\, the artist began to use poker chips as the building blocks of sculptural forms. By creating objects referencing baskets\, vases\, or geometric shapes\, the artist stays true to his interest in working with simplified forms and repeated patterns.  \n  \nSponsored by Royal Guest Hotels\, and Charles Cunningham.  \n  \nImage: Stephen Giannetti\, “South of Summer” \n

SUMMARY:The Art of Being Human\, Shambhala Weekend 1
DESCRIPTION:The Art of Being Human\, the first Shambhala Weekend presents the view that human beings\, at the core\, are fundamentally awake. By training in meditation\, we learn to remember our natural confidence and relax to the freshness of the present moment\, no matter what that moment may bring. This intimate retreat provides instruction for sitting and walking meditation as a means to develop mindfulness in daily life. \nWe’ll discover that awakening is not about escaping from the world we live in but instead is about bringing our practice to every aspect of our lives: work\, play\, relationships\, and more. It all begins with giving ourselves the opportunity to reconnect with our true human existence — the experience of our five senses\, the feeling of emotions in our body\, and yes\, even the awareness of thoughts across our minds. \n

SUMMARY:Straight Ahead and Underfoot: New Paintings by Jamie Madison
DESCRIPTION:  \n“You walk for days among trees and among stones. Rarely does the eye light on a thing\, and then only when it has recognized that thing as a sign of another thing – all the rest is silent and interchangeable\, trees and stones are only what they are.” – Italo Calvino\, Invisible Cities  \nThe John Natsoulas Gallery is proud to present the newest exhibition of Jamie Madison’s elegant compositions. This talented painter centers nature and the reaction to nature within each of her works\, and she uses a variety of media to capture the beauty of the environment. This new collection of large and small mixed media paintings arises from the consideration of the way walking among trees and along creeks looks and feels. Madison focuses on how elements of nature arrange themselves\, and her paintings have a considered randomness\, a sort of natural calligraphy that generates feelings of calmness and wonder. Madison typically begins her process by examining her own photographs of natural settings\, and focuses each painting on a concept such as the effects of light\, the reverence evoked by a stroll in the countryside\, or the beauty of juxtaposition. Through her rapid application of paints\, gouaches\, inks\, pencils\, and collaged paper\, Madison creates dynamic and lyrical compositions.  \nJamie Madison received her BFA at UC Davis\, where she studied with Wayne Thiebaud and Roland Peterson. More recently\, she has studied with Fran O’Niell of the New York Studio School and Enrique Martinez Celaya.  \nThe exhibitions’ opening reception is to be held on Friday\, January 10 from 6-9:00 PM. It will feature live music and free refreshments\, and it is to be held in conjunction with the Downtown Davis 2nd Friday ArtAbout. We are excited to also host Jamie Madison for an artist talk on January 18\, from 1:30 – 2:30pm\, with free admission.  \n

SUMMARY:Davis Poetry Night Reading & Open Mic
DESCRIPTION:Join Poetry in Davis for the first Poetry Night Reading Series of 2025. \nParis-based poet Nicolette Daskalakis will be reading from her latest poetry book “Tell Me I’m Not On Fire” (Rich Poets Press). Opening for Daskalakis will be the Davis poet Dorine Jennette\, author of “Urchin to Follow” (The National Poetry Review Press). The reading will be followed by an open mic\, which begins at 8pm. Please arrive early to sign up for the open mic portion\, as most slots are filled by 7pm. \nThursday\, January 2nd @ 7pm\nJohn Natsoulas Gallery\n521 1st Street\, Davis\, CA \nAbout Nicolette Daskalakis:\nBorn in the fog of San Francisco\, Nicolette Daskalakis is a writer\, filmmaker\, and multidisciplinary artist based in Paris. Her writing has been anthologized by HarperCollins\, nominated for a Pushcart Prize\, and published in numerous literary journals. Daskalakis is the author of multiple poetry books\, including Tell Me I’m Not On Fire (2024) and Portrait of Your Ex Assembling Furniture (2018). She holds a BA in Film & TV Production from the USC School of Cinematic Arts and an MFA from the Institut Supérieur des Arts et du Design de Toulouse. Nicolette is also a graduate of Davis Senior High School. \nAbout “Tell Me I’m Not On Fire”:\n“Tell Me I’m Not on Fire” emergency ejects the reader into a burning landscape populated by men in ski masks\, televised beauty queens\, ordained Elvis impersonators\, and lonely arsonists. These poems set fire to the facade of “Everything’s fine!” and examine what’s hidden underneath. Dark humor\, raw intimacy\, and a host of pop culture references ultimately reveal the unending apocalypse of being human. We’re all on fire\, but that’s alright. Buckle up and let these poems rob a bank\, throw you into an unmarked van\, and high-speed chase a hurricane. Once you get to know them\, you’ll find you have a lot more in common than you thought. \nAbout the Poetry Night Reading Series:\nThe Poetry Night Reading Series\, hosted by Dr. Andy Jones\, is a twice-monthly poetry reading featuring established writers\, poets\, and performers.
