SUMMARY:New Paintings by Marcy Friedman
DESCRIPTION:February 5 – March 1\, 2025  \nNew Paintings by Marcy Friedman at the John Natsoulas Gallery  \nThe John Natsoulas Gallery is proud to present the newest exhibition of paintings by Marcy Friedman. The works in this collection are representative of Friedman’s excellent techniques and abilities to capture diverse subject matter. Figurative and still life paintings are at the heart of this exhibition\, but Friedman also pays particular homage to the process of experiencing art as a museum goer or mural enthusiast in her newest works. Join us for this unique opportunity to see these engaging paintings.  \n“My artistic journey began at Stanford University in the 1950s\, where I pursued a degree in history with a minor in art\, focusing on life drawing. After graduating in 1956 and marrying a Stanford-educated lawyer\, I relocated to Sacramento. There\, during the late 1960s and early 1970s\, I had the privilege of studying under esteemed artists Benny Barrios and Ken Morrow.  \nFollowing a four-decade hiatus dedicated to raising my three sons and engaging in community initiatives—including a significant role in the $120 million campaign to establish the new Crocker Art Museum—I returned to painting as a means of personal renewal after my husband’s passing in 2012. Art became a bridge to refashioning my life as a single person\, fostering new associations with local artists\, and deepening my commitment to drawing from live models in weekly sessions with accomplished artists. I also had the honor of studying independently and periodically with Wayne Thiebaud for six years.  \nThe onset of the pandemic brought an end to live model sessions\, prompting me to explore landscapes and still life compositions. As I approach my 90th year\, I find joy in the bold application of color and the dynamic portrayal of my subjects\, often leaving backgrounds in portraits understated to maintain focus on the essence of the individual. Landscapes present a unique challenge\, inviting me to capture the interplay of light\, color\, and form in the natural world. My work is a testament to resilience and the enduring pursuit of artistic expression\, reflecting a lifelong passion that continues to evolve with each passing year.”  \n-Marcy Friedman  \nThe exhibition’s opening reception is to be held on Saturday\, February 8 from 4:00-7:00 PM. It will feature live music and free refreshments. Immediately prior\, we are honored to host the artist for “A Conversation with Marcy Friedman\,” at 3:00 PM. Please join us for this free event and the reception to follow.  \nOpening Hours:  \nWednesday – Friday: 11am – 5pm Saturday and Sunday: 12pm – 5pm \n \n

SUMMARY:Ronald Peetz: Work in Progress
DESCRIPTION:Ronald Peetz: Work in Progress \nExhibit: February 11 – April 2\, 2025 \nReception: February 14\, 6 – 9  PM (FREE) \nArtist Ronald Peetz has been a stalwart part of the regional art scene since the late 1960s. As an object maker and sculptor\, he delights in incorporating puns\, word play\, and irreverent humor into his work. Starting with his concept\, he chooses any one of the many media he employs\, to best make his idea come to life. In so doing\, his sculpture and mixed media pieces lean heavily towards social critique and parody\, blended with a lighter touch of humor and surrealism. Equally present is his interest in the history of art\, particularly his own 20th century inspirations\, from René Magritte and Marcel Duchamp\, to William T. Wiley\, one of his friends and mentors. \n  \nArtist Talk with Ronald Peetz \nMarch 15\, 1 – 2:30 PM (FREE\, $10 donation suggested) \nTalking with Ronald Peetz is much like his work – fun and full of humor. Peetz’s conceptual pieces are anything but dry\, as he uses materials such as baseballs\, violin cases\, and funerary headstones\, to underline his political and social messages. Join him as he talks about his days as an art student in the 60s\, inspired by artists such as Stephen Kaltenbach\, William Wiley\, and others. \n  \nSponsored by Helen Richardson. \n  \nThe Pence Gallery is open 11:30 AM – 5 PM\, Tuesday through Sunday (closed Mondays). \n  \nImage: Ronald Peetz\, “The Old Ball Game” \n

SUMMARY:Davis Bike Garage: Love Your Bike
DESCRIPTION:February is a big month this year for The Bike Campaign and the Bike Garage (BG). \nWe have moved to our new Davis location at 606 Peña Drive\, #300\, and both the Davis and Woodland location are open again after our holiday break. \nOur grand reopening in Davis is Saturday\, February 1 from 8:00 a.m. to noon\, and includes a bike sale with all bikes $25 off the listed price. \n“The Bike Campaign is excited to be celebrating the opening of our Bike Garage’s new location\, which will allow us to provide more services to more people\,” founder Maria Contreras Tebbutt said. \nAlong with the new location there are new hours: Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to noon\, and Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; June through August summer hours are Saturdays and Wednesdays from 8:00 a.m. to noon. In Woodland\, the BG location at Douglass Middle School is open Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. \nOur annual Love Your Bike Event starts February 8 and continues through the month. This popular event helps cyclists get their bikes ready for Spring\, and provides great information about the basics of cycling and how to keep your bike on the road and operating well. \nCyclists can bring bikes in for a free bike inspection\, and basic repairs can be done on site\, although we don’t have the capacity to do more complex jobs. \nWhile we can inspect any bike\, we currently don’t have the resources to do repairs on electric bikes\, hydraulic brakes\, or bikes that are severely damaged or rusted. \nTrained volunteers will be available to assist with test rides\, helmet fittings\, tire pumping\, and basic bike education including the ABCs. \n\nAir – making sure your tires are properly inflated makes riding easier and safer\nBrakes – being able to slow or stop your bike is crucial to staying safe while riding\nChain – your chain should be well oiled\, with no rust\n\nDid you know that your bike should have eight reflectors to be legal on California streets? Come by and we can check them for you and replace lost or worn reflectors. \nThe BG also sells helmets\, bells\, locks and lights. It’s a good time to check your helmet and replace it if it is worn or doesn’t fit correctly. \nA bell for your bike is useful if you do a lot of riding on the greenbelt or Davis Bike Loop to warn pedestrians that you’re coming up behind them. \nIf you’re riding in the 20 minutes before sunrise or sunset\, or when it’s dark\, you should also have lights on your bike. Headlights and taillights help cars see you when visibility isn’t optimal. \n

SUMMARY:Small Mouth Sounds
DESCRIPTION:A minimalist work of experimental theater\, Small Mouth Sounds casts the audience as voyeurs in an entertaining adventure that gradually turns more serious. Set at a rustic retreat\, the dramedy\, presented by the UC Davis Department of Theatre and Dance\, opens Feb. 27 in the Wyatt Pavilion Theatre. Directed by Peter J. Kuo\, winter quarter Granada Artist-in-Residence\, the play is set amid the overwhelming quiet of a haven in the woods\, where six runaways from city life embark on a silent retreat. As these strangers confront internal demons both profound and absurd\, their vows of silence collide with the achingly human need to connect. Content warning: Adult language\, themes and situations. \n

SUMMARY:The Color of Compromise Discussion Group led by Rev. Stephanie Milton
DESCRIPTION:Reverend Stephanie Milton will guest preach and lead a three week book study based on Jemar Tisby’s book The Color of Compromise: The Truth about the American Church’s Complicity in Racism. Please join us for this exciting series.\n\nTisby’s The Color of Compromise: The Truth about the American Church’s Complicity in Racism sheds light on the history of racism within the American church and challenges readers to confront this uncomfortable truth. Through meticulous research and analysis\, Tisby provides a compelling narrative that underscores the urgent need for the church to actively work towards racial justice and reconciliation. The book traces the origin and perpetuation of racism in Christianity from Columbus’ invasion of the Americas through the current era in the United States. We’ll delve into the ways in which the church has been complicit in upholding systems of oppression and discrimination\, ultimately calling for a transformation towards a more inclusive and equitable faith community.\nRev. Stephanie Milton believes that the church can be a place of healing and transformation\, individually and within the community. The sacraments\, spiritual development\, and worship experience are vital to congregational life. Rev. Stephanie is a fifth-year doctoral candidate at the University of California\, Davis\, specializing in African American religion and healthcare. She holds a Master of Arts in Political Science from Washington University in St. Louis\, and a Master of Divinity from Candler School of Theology at Emory University. Her research interests include the confluence between religion and health\, the impact of spiritual and moral harm\, and decolonial feminist theology. Ordained in the United Church of Christ\, Rev. Stephanie has worked in diverse communities\, including sex and gender equity education in higher education\, advocating against intimate partner violence\, and providing spiritual care to US veterans.
