DESCRIPTION:August 27 – September 27\, 2025 \nNew Exhibition – “Jeff Myers: Convergence” \n  \nThe John Natsoulas Gallery is proud to present this solo exhibition of new paintings by Sacramento-based painter Jeff Myers. Through his inventive figurative works\, Myers explores vivid tonalities and plays with ideas of science and technology. Employing meaningful anachronisms and surrealist compositions\, Myers presents multi-layered works that reveal his interest in the unexpected.  \nIn this new exhibition\, Myers addresses his diverse interests through juxtapositions in his distinctive\, colorful style. His primary themes center on both natural and human-made environments\, and how individuals relate to those settings. Myers introduces nature as an integral part of each painting\, depicting elements within the borders and confines of different figures\, forms of technology\, and everyday objects. Myers was raised in a photojournalistic environment; both his parents are photographers and\, with the guidance of Ansel Adams in their early stages of photographing\, they amassed a visual archive of 700\,000 transparencies of the west and its people. Myers himself has been published by National Geographic\, National Wildlife\, Animals Magazine of London\, and many other publications. His depictions of various models of cameras within this exhibition reflect his extensive experience behind the lens.   \nMyers’ struggles with dyslexia and the public education system in his youth pushed him to enroll in college art courses\, including with Wayne Thiebaud. Myers began exhibiting at the age of 15 and debuted with a one person show at only 19. Myers’s early paintings\, influenced by Italian Futurism and the Mexican Muralists\, deal with marginalized American sub-cultures juxtaposed with class differences. Today\, his authenticity is both provocative and pioneering\, and his multidisciplinary practice interlaces new and old media. Myers’s paintings\, photographs\, works on paper\, and collages have been published and shown extensively nationally and locally. This exhibition represents the elegant fusion of diverse styles and themes that have been present throughout his impressive career.  \nPlease join us to celebrate this new exhibition for the opening reception on September 6 from 7-9PM. DESCRIPTION:This course is suitable for beginners as well as more experienced writers who are looking for structure\, accountability\, and community. Over four weeks\, we’ll explore memory\, meaning\, and voice through creative in-class exercises\, readings\, discussion\, and homework. Each class will focus on creating a community of writers\, as well as generating new material and developing confidence on the page so you can begin to shape your stories. Readings will include both canonical texts and contemporary voices\, including Joan Didion\, Jo Ann Beard\, E.B. White\, James Baldwin\, Mary Karr\, Roxane Gay\, Jaquira Díaz\, Doíreann Ni Ghríofa\, and Yiyun Li. \nAbout the Instructor \nSarah McColl is the author of the critically acclaimed literary memoir\, Joy Enough (Liveright/W.W. Norton & Company\, 2019). Since January 2021\, she has published Lost Art\, a monthly newsletter about the creative work of (mostly) dead women and a 2023 finalist for the Andy Warhol Arts Writers Grant. DESCRIPTION:Did you know that a huge colony of migratory bats live under the Yolo Causeway during the summer? Join Yolo Basin Foundation for a summertime Bat Talk and Tour to learn all about these amazing and beneficial mammals. \nFollowing a presentation on bat natural history\, where you will have the opportunity to see live ambassador bats up close\, the group will carpool out to the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area in Davis for a brief tour of the wetlands and rice fields. Then we get in position to watch the “flyout” of the largest urban colony of Mexican free-tailed bats in California. The bats emerge in long ribbons as they head out to hunt for insects for the night. \nThe whole experience takes about two and a half hours. This is a family friendly event! There is a small amount of walking. Those in wheelchairs or unable to walk may view the bats by car. Please let us know if you have special needs. \nRefunding or rescheduling tickets requires two weeks notice and is subject to a $10 administrative fee. \nIn regards to the recent heat: While it can be very hot in town during the heat of the day\, the first hour and a half of this program will take place in an air conditioned room and from your own vehicle during the auto tour. By the time we are outside to view the flyout\, it will be nearly sunset. It is typically 10-15 degrees cooler in the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area where we watch the bat flyout.
