SUMMARY:Susannah Israel: Procession
DESCRIPTION:The John Natsoulas Gallery is thrilled to announce the exhibition of Susannah Israel’s distinctive ceramics. Her individualized figures each possess an openness of expression\, inviting close contemplation and investigation into their stories. \nTo be exhibited on the second floor of the gallery\, her body of work is a reflection of the humor she uses to confront the struggles of life. Her emphasis of gesture takes an equal role to her interest in abstraction and distortion. The dynamic figures\, some in conversation with a paired piece\, offer viewers discrete narratives to consider\, even as the overarching themes remain cohesive. The wide date-range present in this exhibition provides insight into her developments. Her repetitious use of unglazed terracotta-colored clay reminds viewers of the earthen and historical origins of her medium. The warmth and rich coloration of each figure shines\, even when the figure is subsumed entirely with glazes and surface designs. \nOriginally from New York\, the artist studied ceramics for some time at Pratt Art Institute with Byron Temple\, and she later earned both a BA and an MFA from San Francisco State University. Her extensive teaching at numerous institutions in California took her to schools across the state. Her work has been exhibited throughout the world\, and her sculpture is found in museums\, private art collections\, and public art sites throughout the United States. Her career distinctions include the Fletcher Challenge Premier Award\, a Virginia Groot Foundation Award\, and residencies at the Archie Bray and the Doelger Art Center. Her extensive output of writing primarily showcases and uplifts talented artists who are typically excluded from galleries and museums. \nThe exhibition’s opening reception will be held on Friday August 21\, from 7 to 9 PM. It will feature live music and refreshments.

SUMMARY:Yoyo Hu: Future Relics
DESCRIPTION:The John Natsoulas Gallery is proud to announce the major exhibition of ceramic installation artist\, Yoyo Hu\, opening August 2026. The large-scale artworks in this exhibition challenge viewers to consider both porcelain and storytelling in new ways while contemplating these immense ceramic installations that draw from the artist’s Chinese heritage. \nFuture Relics positions the contemporary moment as a future excavation site\, striving to suggest through fragmentation\, that the artworks hover between ruin and reconstruction. Hu carefully considers how future historians and archaeologists will perceive the present\, notably in the face of ever evolving technologies that shift human habits\, emotions\, and infrastructures. She ultimately asks\, what forms of memory will be preserved\, distorted\, or erased. By utilizing one of the oldest human technologies – ceramics – she prompts further thought on the matter of what survives and what is vulnerable to loss. Hu’s inventive combinations of artistic techniques\, blending the ancient and the ultra-contemporary\, reflect her fascination with the possibilities engendered by modernity. Use of 3-D modeling and printing is a hallmark of her process. It allows her to develop installations at an architectural scale\, but it also provides her with the ability to plan and introduce electrical components such as LED lights into her compositions as notable additional mediums. \nHu’s powerful questions about the future remain in compelling conversation with the past – as she addresses the history of her hometown and her family. The large-scale Beneath the Mountain installation is a direct commentary on the geography of that town\, and its war-time origins. Air-raid shelters\, carved into the cliffs\, housed her grandmother during the traumatic bombings during WWII. By drawing on the mythological stories and characters that shape the very foundations of Chinese culture\, Hu builds worlds that reflect not just that ancient past\, but the stories of her and her family. She imbues her artwork\, through a drive to preserve personal narratives\, with the spirit she sees so clearly in the artwork of ancient civilizations. In the four distinct installations in the exhibition\, survival and transformation remain as the underlying threads. \nYoyo Hu is a Chinese-born sculptor and installation artist based in the Bay Area. Born and raised in Chongquing\, Hu builds large ceramic installations that function as imaged ruins. Originally trained in traditional painting at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute\, she later discovered her passion for clay. She went on to receive an MFA from the Academy of Art University\, and has since established a studio in Berkeley. \nThe exhibition’s opening reception will be held on August 28\, from 7 to 9 PM. It will feature live music and refreshments.

SUMMARY:Pizza Night
DESCRIPTION:It’s pizza night at Upper Crust Bakery!\n\n\n\n\n\nHow Pizza Night Works\n\n\nPizza Night is Wednesdays at our Davis location only. We’ll start in Winters soon.\nWe generally do not take walk-ins—please pre-order your pizza!\nPlace your order early! We often sell out.\nWe make a limited number of pizzas each half-hour. If your 1st choice of pick-up time is sold out\, try an alternate time slot.\nOrders close at noon Wednesday or when we sell out\, whatever comes first.\nYou can get desserts\, baked goods\, beverages\, beer & wine when you pick up your pizza.\nHaving trouble ordering? Call (530) 750-1180.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Pizza Night\n\n\nEach Wednesday we turn our 10-ton hearthstone deck oven up to 11 and turn out some amazing artisan pizzas. It’s a somewhat exclusive affair since our capacity is limited—and we regularly sell out. We’re a bakery after all—not a pizzeria. There’s no assembly line or tunnel baking. Each pizza is created by hand and served with a healthy dose of love. No delivery\, sorry. \nOur pizzas are crafted in the same farm-to-oven tradition as our baked goods. We use California-grown and -milled premium flour\, 15% organic whole grains\, and a long-fermentation\, 100% naturally leavened formula—resulting in a really tasty and bubbly crust. And we use only the best ingredients and toppings\, with produce we like to source at the Davis Farmers Market. \nThere’s only one size—about 14 inches in diameter—and six slices. They generally serve one to three humans\, depending on appetite. We also offer big\, sharable garden salads\, local beer & wine\, soft drinks\, and amazing desserts.

SUMMARY:Author Event: M. Kat Anderson
DESCRIPTION:M. Kat Anderson @ The Avid Reader\nThursday Sep 3rd\, 2026 | 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM \nAbout the Book – I Sing to the Earth and She Sings Back \nI Sing to the Earth and She Sings Back provides readers with practical\, grounded tools for reclaiming earth-based wisdom. Each chapter explores a distinct pathway to intimacy with nature: slowing down to reimagine time; reawakening childlike wonder; seeing the sentience of other life forms; practicing reciprocity and partnership; attuning to seasonal and lunar cycles; and more. Throughout\, M. Kat Anderson shares deep personal stories of her own quest to heal a sense of disconnection from the earth. As a non-Native author who has collaborated with California Indigenous elders for decades\, she offers a perspective shaped by humility\, curiosity\, and a commitment to respectful engagement. In a voice both scholarly and soulful\, she opens a door for non-Native readers seeking authentic belonging to nature without cultural appropriation. \nAbout the Author \nM. Kat Anderson is an ethnoecologist\, writer\, gardener\, and gatherer dedicated to restoring relationships between people and native ecosystems. With a Ph.D. in Wildland Resource Science from UC Berkeley\, she has spent over 25 years learning from Native American communities\, integrating Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) with Western science. As the author of Tending the Wild\, she highlights indigenous stewardship practices essential for biodiversity\, climate resilience\, and cultural restoration. Her latest work\, I Sing to the Earth and She Sings Back\, explores how we can reimagine time\, embrace reciprocity\, and cultivate deep\, healing relationships with the natural world through essays that examine the cyclical rhythms of life\, the intelligence of other beings\, and the wisdom of holistic perception. \n
