For more information\, call 530-756-7807\, email judy@daviscemetery.org or visit www.daviscemetery.org. \n__ \nMargaret Eldred – Artist’s Statement–A Miscellany of Trees: \nI love trees–in the garden\, in orchards\, along the road\, or in the wildlands.  Whenever I go out by foot\, bicycle\, or car to explore the countryside\, I take my camera with me\, ready to capture a beautiful or unique tree. \nI call this show a miscellany because I strive to present the diversity of California’s trees.  I concentrate on natives–oaks of all kinds of course\, but also willows\, buckeyes\, manzanitas\, pines\, and more. I am fascinated by the way the kinds of trees change as one travels north and south\, uphill and down throughout the state. Most of the pictures here are of local trees\, primarily valley and blue oaks\, drawn from my meanderings along the back roads and trails of Yolo\, Solano\, and Contra Costa counties.  I am always on the lookout for interesting trees\, so I take photos of trees whenever I travel–backpacking in the Sierras\, walking in England\, trekking in Tanzania\, Botswana\, and Morocco–and turn them into drawings or paintings. So you will see bristlecone pines\, English sycamores\, yellow fever trees (acacias)\, and baobabs. I also like to explore the trees planted in gardens\, in orchards\, and along roadsides. \nThis show is also a miscellany because I use different media and different techniques. \nI use a technical pen for my drawings because it allows me to be very precise. I think of my drawings as tree portraits.  I zoom in to a close-up view\, focusing on branch structure\, leaf shape\, and other detail. I try to capture their individuality–what makes one species stand out from another\, what makes one tree stand out from its neighbors.  -I similarly use close-ups in my acrylic paintings but play around with different techniques–sometimes standard brush strokes\, sometimes palette knife painting\, sometimes broken color. Each one captures the light a little differently. Right now I am focusing on palette knife painting because I think the texture of palette knife marks most closely reflects the moving light of leaves in a gentle breeze. \nI love painting trees. It encourages me to get outside\, go hiking\, and observe them more closely. Their beauty\, complexity\, and place in the landscape continue to awe me.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Pence Gallery for our 2nd Friday ArtAbout reception on January 13\, 6 – 9 PM (free admission).  \n  \nThe Elusive Muse: New Work by Kelley Mogilka \nJan. 7 – Feb. 3\, 2023 \nKelley Mogilka’s figurative paintings and drawings center on capturing the elusive muse\, a creative force that flows from brush to canvas. By working from a model\, she looks for this inspiration in the subtle gestures\, glances\, or poses\, which often evoke a presence that is both timeless and ephemeral. Her use of harmonious color and expressive brushwork ultimately reflects an interest in capturing the sitter’s internal state of being. \n  \nTiny Show \nJan. 6 – Feb. 26\, 2023 \nThe Tiny Show features “tiny” works of art – modest-sized pieces limited to 5” x 7”. Various local and regional artists were invited to display their small but spectacular creations\, including Valentina Arenas\, Tamsen Armstrong\, Karen Burns\, Deziree Dizon\, Jim Darke\, and Amy Vidra\, among many others. While the works themselves may be small\, the creativity and artistic talent they reveal is immeasurable. \n  \nMyrtle Press Prints: Portfolio x 2 \nDec. 9\, 2022 – Jan. 29\, 2023 \nPortfolio x 2 marks the first display of Myrtle Press’ invitational print exchanges in our region\, including prints made through various processes by respected printmakers. SUMMARY:Mark Bulwinkle Retrospective Exhibition Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the John Natsoulas Gallery in Davis\, California to see selected sculptures and prints from the 50-year career of the legendary artist Mark Bulwinkle\, the Oakland-based innovator of graphically cut steel. The exhibition will be open from January 11th\, 2023 to February 26\, 2023.  \nA public reception with music and refreshments will be held on January 13th\, 2023\, 7:00-9:00 pm.  \n Known for his manic steel silhouettes of dog-faced flowers and perverse\, joyful figures with electrified grins\, Mark Bulwinkle’s nutty artwork can be spotted across the Pacific coast\, displayed proudly in windows\, overgrown gardens\, and small businesses. Bulwinkle’s graphically cut steel propelled him into fame\, influencing the creation of Burning Man in the 1980s and even leading him to reject an interview with Oprah in 1991. However\, lesser known but equally impressive is his extensive work in diverse media: ceramics\, silkscreen\, papier-mache\, and even digital illustration. His mastery acquired from 100-hour work weeks as a ship welder for Bethlehem Steel was important to the development of his cut steel works\, but equally key was his early training as a skilled printmaker and graphic artist. Bulwinkle received an MFA in Printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1974\, making hundreds of fabulously intricate industrial enamel silkscreens and woodcuts. In these early years\, he also learned ceramic slipcasting techniques from the renowned trompe l’oeil artist Richard Shaw.  \nThis retrospective exhibition showcases Bulwinkle’s mastery of color and form in both two and three dimensions throughout the last 50 decades\, tracing the development of his art through diverse materials and revealing the stories embedded in his work. On display are a selection of his woodcuts and screen prints\, including several gorgeous prints from his time at the San Francisco Art Institute. Bulwinkle’s flamboyant ceramic works from graduate school will also be featured\, as well as papier-mache works that once decorated the walls of his iconic Manilla St. House\, a towering steel assemblage sculpture built around a modest townhouse that became a landmark in Oakland from 1975-1991. Recent cut steel works painted with colorful enamel will also be featured\, which are often imitated but unmistakably Bulwinkle’s.  \n  \nThe John Natsoulas Gallery is delighted to exhibit half a century of works from this rather singular artist.
