SUMMARY:Moments in Time & Space
DESCRIPTION:Moments in Time & Space is a new exhibit opening on April 14 at the Pence Gallery. Ceramic artists Claudia Tarantino\, Daniel Alejandro Trejo\, and Bill Heiderich share an interest in capturing the changing quality of time. In her exquisite trompe l’oeil sculpture\, Claudia Tarantino attempts “to capture moments in time\, past and present.” Representing keepsakes such as photographs\, toys\, and children’s shoes\, she creates tableau to access our collective memories. Bill Heiderich reinterprets vessels by using shapes derived from traditional pottery. As stage sets of movement and tension\, Heiderich is interested in change and the passage of time seen in ordinary objects. Daniel Alejandro Trejo’s ceramic forms play with enclosure\, as they frame internal and external space.  \n  \nMoments in Time & Space: Bill Heiderich\, Claudia Tarantino\, Daniel Alejandro Trejo  \nExhibit dates: April 14 – June 12\, 2023 \nOpening reception: Friday\, April 14\, 6 – 9 PM (free) \nCeramics reception: Friday\, April 28\, 6 – 9 PM (free\, in conjunction with the annual Natsoulas Gallery’s ceramics conference) \nAddress: Pence Gallery | 212 D Street\, Davis\, CA 95616 \nGallery hours: 11:30 AM – 5 PM\, Tuesday – Sunday (closed Mondays) \n  \nThis exhibit is generously sponsored by Bill & Nancy Roe. \n  \nImage: Claudia Tarantino\, “Moments in Time”

SUMMARY:Sayako Dairiki: Mended Memories
DESCRIPTION:Sayako Dairiki: Mended Memories \nExhibit dates: June 27 – August 20\, 2023 \nReception: Friday\, July 14\, 6 – 9 PM \nArtist Talk: Saturday\, August 5\, 2 – 3 PM (FREE) \nSayako Dairiki approaches painting with a focus on mindfulness. Following her adoption of sashiko or visible mending to fix holes in several of her garments and blankets\, Sayako began to echo the stitching pattern on canvas. Sashiko is a traditional Japanese mending technique practiced for centuries\, in which repeated stitching in geometric shapes or lines was done to strengthen fabrics and to ward off costly future repairs. At home during the pandemic and unable to visit her native Japan\, she began to repair holes with this technique\, as well as using patches from vintage kimonos. In the process\, the artist began to see connections to different generations of her family\, and how ‘mending’ was a metaphor for healing and reconnecting with others.  \nSponsored by Tom Doyle & Kathy Joseph \nImage: Dairiki\, “For the Words She Couldn’t Say” \n  \n
