As an object maker and sculptor\, he delights in incorporating puns\, word play\, and irreverent humor into his work. Starting with his concept\, he chooses any one of the many media he employs\, to best make his idea come to life. In so doing\, his sculpture and mixed media pieces lean heavily towards social critique and parody\, blended with a lighter touch of humor and surrealism. Equally present is his interest in the history of art\, particularly his own 20th century inspirations\, from René Magritte and Marcel Duchamp\, to William T. Wiley\, one of his friends and mentors. \n  \nArtist Talk with Ronald Peetz \nMarch 15\, 1 – 2:30 PM (FREE\, $10 donation suggested) \nTalking with Ronald Peetz is much like his work – fun and full of humor. Peetz’s conceptual pieces are anything but dry\, as he uses materials such as baseballs\, violin cases\, and funerary headstones\, to underline his political and social messages. SUMMARY:Cultural Currents Reception with Artist Mark Romero
DESCRIPTION:Cultural Currents presents a collection of pencil illustrations and screen prints inspired by the intricate artistry and profound symbolism of Mesoamerican and Pre-Hispanic cultures. The pieces highlight the shared traditions\, mythologies\, and aesthetics that connected civilizations across Mexico\, Guatemala\, Honduras\, El Salvador\, Nicaragua\, and Costa Rica. By tracing these historical linkages\, the artworks celebrate the cultural unity of Mesoamerica and how these traditions and influences endure. \nMark Romero received his BFA and his Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of the Arts\, Philadelphia. Solo and group exhibitions include Mission Cultural Center (San Francisco)\, Dupont Underground gallery (Washington DC) and Casa de Español (Sacramento). He has given artist workshops at the UC Davis Craft Center\, TANA (Woodland) and The Berkeley School and participated in a residency at Galería Casa Equis (CDMX). \nAn artists’ reception will be held Saturday\, March 1st from 6-9PM at the Latino Center of Art and Culture (2700 Front Street Sacramento\, CA 95818). DESCRIPTION:Art in Action: Fanciful Fairy Houses \nSunday\, March 9* | Session #1: 12 – 2 PM\, Session #2: 2:30 – 4:30 PM \nOur fairy houses are back! Create your own magical fairy hideaway using a variety of decorative and natural materials\, including tree trunk slices\, moss\, acorns\, wooden mushrooms\, flowers\, and more. \n  \nHow it works: \nArt in Action engages kids in art projects that are fun\, creative\, and collaborative with their family members. This is a drop-in program\, for ages 5-12\, with no registration required. Space and supplies are limited to the first 25 participants per session and are available on a first come\, first served basis. \n  \nThere is a fee of $5 for Pence Members or $10 for Non-Members (materials included). The price is per person\, per session. You are welcome to attend both. Pay at the door with cash or card. A parent or adult caregiver is required to stay\, but only has to pay for the project for themselves if they are also doing art. \n  \n*Please note that starting in January 2025\, the Art in Action program will be moving to one workshop per quarter due to limited funding. We’ll be offering two sessions per workshop\, however\, to include more opportunities for families to participate. \n

DESCRIPTION:Figure Drawing Session \n2nd & 4th Wednesday of the month\, 6:30 – 9 PM \n$15 Members\, $22 Non-Members | Limited to 10 participants \nRegistration & payment is required in advance through the Pence’s website. \n  \nWe hold self-guided figure drawing sessions with a nude model every 2nd & 4th Wednesday of the month\, from 6:30 – 9 PM. This group is for both experienced artists and amateurs to have an opportunity to draw from the nude model. If you have never drawn from a live model before and would like to join us\, you are very welcome! People of all skill levels\, ages 18 and up\, are welcome and encouraged to join. \nThis is not a class\, and no instruction is provided. The atmosphere is relaxed and non-competitive. Bring your own art materials\, and we’ll provide a comfortable place to sketch or paint live models in our upstairs classroom space. Participants will work independently through a warm up with shorter poses and longer\, twenty-minute poses. Although participants will be painting indoors at the Pence Gallery\, the class will choose references from places in California and pretend to visit the countryside\, near the water\, café\, or a city to paint. Reference photos will be provided\, but students are welcome to bring their own reference photos to paint from. Throughout the class\, four different subjects will be painted\, with one session being a figurative/portrait painting\, and demonstrations\, critiques\, and individual guidance will be provided. DESCRIPTION:Figure Drawing Session \n2nd & 4th Wednesday of the month\, 6:30 – 9 PM \n$15 Members\, $22 Non-Members | Limited to 10 participants \nRegistration & payment is required in advance through the Pence’s website. \n  \nWe hold self-guided figure drawing sessions with a nude model every 2nd & 4th Wednesday of the month\, from 6:30 – 9 PM. This group is for both experienced artists and amateurs to have an opportunity to draw from the nude model. If you have never drawn from a live model before and would like to join us\, you are very welcome! People of all skill levels\, ages 18 and up\, are welcome and encouraged to join. \n  \nThis is not a class\, and no instruction is provided. The atmosphere is relaxed and non-competitive. Bring your own art materials\, and we’ll provide a comfortable place to sketch or paint live models in our upstairs classroom space. Participants will work independently through a warm up with shorter poses and longer\, twenty-minute poses.
