DESCRIPTION:Exhibit It! A Community Art Exhibit \nIt’s time for our annual non-juried exhibit to highlight the talent of our community’s artists! Artists ages 16 and up can drop off one artwork in any medium at the Pence Gallery on Friday\, June 26\, beginning at 11:30 AM. This is a first come\, first served process. No early drop-offs accepted. \nArtworks are limited to 30″ in any direction\, including the frame\, and no more than 50 pounds. All artworks must be framed\, or ready to install. \nThe first 50 submissions will be admitted after artists pay a fee of $35 for Members and $40 for non-Members. Please be prepared to fill out information about your piece including the title\, year made\, medium\, dimensions\, retail price\, etc. \nParticipants can win the Curator’s Choice award\, announced during the reception on July 10. SUMMARY:Slice: A Juried Exhibit of Regional Art
DESCRIPTION:Slice: A Juried Exhibit of Regional Art\nExhibit: July 10 – August 16\, 2026\nReception: July 10\, 6-9 PM (Awards at 8 PM) \nSlice celebrates the diversity of expression in our region with an array of sculpture\, prints\, paintings\, and photography created by 36 visual artists. This year marks the 14th anniversary of the Pence’s regional call to artists\, affectionately called Slice. Representing a ‘slice’ of work fresh from the studio produced by new and established artists working in the state\, this annual juried exhibit has quickly gained a reputation for displaying innovative and thought-provoking work. The selected work is chosen by the juror for its merit rather than its ability to fit within any particular theme or concept. As with any juried ‘open theme’ selection\, the connections between the artworks can prove to be mind-bending or head-scratching. \nGioia Fonda is this year’s juror of Slice. Fonda is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in two-dimensional media (painting\, drawing\, sewing\, and photography) with occasional forays in sculpture\, social practice\, and public art. She tends to work in a colorful and non-objective manner\, but just under the surface\, her work is often imbued with storytelling and narrative. She has a bi-coastal art education\, having earned a BFA at the California College of the Arts and an MFA at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Gioia is a dedicated member of the Sacramento art community\, contributing as an artist\, curator\, jurist\, and collaborator. She is also a tenured professor of art at Sacramento City College\, where she teaches painting\, drawing\, and design. Working in oil and acrylic on canvas\, her paintings have an illustrative quality\, immersing the viewer in imaginative worlds where flora works in tandem with geometric forms. Contrasting elements of line and shape collaborate with one another\, inventing dynamic universes with enchanting qualities. The surreal nature of her paintings is augmented by the use of augmented reality technology\, in which viewers can see forms take 3D form. DESCRIPTION:Figure Drawing Session\nWednesday\, August 12\, 6:30-9 PM\n$15 Members\, $22 Non-Members | Limited to 10 participants\nRegistration & payment is required in advance through the Pence’s website. \nWe hold self-guided figure drawing sessions with a nude model every 2nd & 4th Wednesday of the month\, from 6:30-9 PM. This group is for both experienced artists and amateurs to have an opportunity to draw from the nude model. If you have never drawn from a live model before and would like to join us\, you are very welcome! People of all skill levels\, ages 18 and up\, are welcome and encouraged to join. \nThis is not a class\, and no instruction is provided. The atmosphere is relaxed and non-competitive. Bring your own art materials\, and we’ll provide a comfortable place to sketch or paint live models in our upstairs classroom space. Participants will work independently through a warm up with shorter poses and longer\, twenty-minute poses. DESCRIPTION:AXIS GALLERY\n21st ANNUAL NATIONAL JURIED COMPETITION\nAugust 7–30\, 2026 \nSecond Saturday Reception August 8\, 2026\, 5–8 PM \nAxis Gallery presents the 21st Annual National Juried Competition\, a group exhibition featuring works selected by juror Sharon Butler\, founder of Two Coats of Paint. The exhibition includes works by artists from around the country in a variety of mediums. \nJUROR’S STATEMENT\nThe Axis Gallery received 658 submissions to an open call\, and I could have selected five exhibitions instead of one without feeling professionally compromised. Narrowing such a high- quality profusion down to a single hang was a real challenge. Whereas traditional thematic trawls tend to be self-limiting\, open calls like this one afford the juror no circumscribing guidance – only that of quality on the terms artists set for themselves. And the work I perused made it clear that artists throughout the country and across genres are richly engaged in conversations about ideas\, materials\, emotional content\, and formal issues. The show’s density is testament to the abundance of pieces that were simply too good to leave out. \nSince no theme was handed down in advance\, my job was to arrive at a selection piece by piece\, submission by submission\, until I saw the show take shape from what artists are concerned about and refracting through their work right now. I encountered a gnawing disquiet\, an insistence on making things by hand\, an interest in place\, and the use of materiality and process as metaphor. Although I don’t believe most of the submitting artists know one another\, the selected works seem connected\, as if they might mutually complete sentences. And indeed\, one virtue of an open call is that it is liable to produce an unplanned consensus – a kind of serendipity that might elude a more deliberately curated process with a long list of criteria. \nI’ll admit my own slight bias in the selection. I’m somewhat less interested in traditional technical skill than in inventiveness – in what happens when an artist reaches for something that isn’t supposed to be an art material at all\, and in instances when artists find meaningful content in improbable subject matter. Some of the pieces here employ images or objects that may challenge the conventional view of what counts as art\, and I kept coming back to those. This exhibition\, then\, represents one person’s path through a terrific field of entries. It is\, I hope\, a generous and thoughtful selection. I remain thoroughly impressed that when the Axis Gallery asked a wide\, unfiltered public to submit work\, the items that came in response were at once more surprising and more complementary than I had any right to expect. \n– Sharon Butler\, July 2026 \nABOUT THE JUROR\nSharon Butler is a painter and the founder of Two Coats of Paint\, an award-winning NYC blogazine about painting. She has held solo exhibitions in at CLEA RSKY\, Jennifer Baahng Gallery\, Theodore Gallery\, Pocket Utopia\, and Central Fine Arts (all in NYC); in Connecticut at Slater Memorial Museum\, Real Art Ways\, and Furnace Art on Paper Archive; and in the university galleries at University of Alabama\, University of Connecticut\, and SUNY Westchester. Her paintings are characterized by a tendency toward Casualism\, a term she coined in an article published in The Brooklyn Rail to describe an approach to painting that values imperfection\, incompleteness\, and process over traditional color theory\, pleasing composition\, and polished forms.\nHer work has been featured in publications such as The Brooklyn Rail\, Hyperallergic\, artcritical\, The New Criterion\, and New York Magazine. She has received awards from Creative Capital and the Warhol Foundation\, Yaddo\, Connecticut Commission on the Arts\, and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. \nShe lives and works in Long Island City\, Queens.

DESCRIPTION:Figure Drawing Session\nWednesday\, August 26\, 6:30-9 PM\n$15 Members\, $22 Non-Members | Limited to 10 participants\nRegistration & payment is required in advance through the Pence’s website. \nWe hold self-guided figure drawing sessions with a nude model every 2nd & 4th Wednesday of the month\, from 6:30-9 PM. This group is for both experienced artists and amateurs to have an opportunity to draw from the nude model. If you have never drawn from a live model before and would like to join us\, you are very welcome! People of all skill levels\, ages 18 and up\, are welcome and encouraged to join. \nThis is not a class\, and no instruction is provided. The atmosphere is relaxed and non-competitive. Bring your own art materials\, and we’ll provide a comfortable place to sketch or paint live models in our upstairs classroom space. Participants will work independently through a warm up with shorter poses and longer\, twenty-minute poses. SUMMARY:21st National Juried Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:AXIS GALLERY\n21st ANNUAL NATIONAL JURIED COMPETITION\nAugust 7–30\, 2026 \nSecond Saturday Reception August 8\, 2026\, 5–8 PM \nAxis Gallery presents the 21st Annual National Juried Competition\, a group exhibition featuring works selected by juror Sharon Butler\, founder of Two Coats of Paint. The exhibition includes works by artists from around the country in a variety of mediums. \nJUROR’S STATEMENT\nThe Axis Gallery received 658 submissions to an open call\, and I could have selected five exhibitions instead of one without feeling professionally compromised. Narrowing such a high- quality profusion down to a single hang was a real challenge. Whereas traditional thematic trawls tend to be self-limiting\, open calls like this one afford the juror no circumscribing guidance – only that of quality on the terms artists set for themselves. And the work I perused made it clear that artists throughout the country and across genres are richly engaged in conversations about ideas\, materials\, emotional content\, and formal issues. The show’s density is testament to the abundance of pieces that were simply too good to leave out. \nSince no theme was handed down in advance\, my job was to arrive at a selection piece by piece\, submission by submission\, until I saw the show take shape from what artists are concerned about and refracting through their work right now. I encountered a gnawing disquiet\, an insistence on making things by hand\, an interest in place\, and the use of materiality and process as metaphor. Although I don’t believe most of the submitting artists know one another\, the selected works seem connected\, as if they might mutually complete sentences. And indeed\, one virtue of an open call is that it is liable to produce an unplanned consensus – a kind of serendipity that might elude a more deliberately curated process with a long list of criteria. \nI’ll admit my own slight bias in the selection. I’m somewhat less interested in traditional technical skill than in inventiveness – in what happens when an artist reaches for something that isn’t supposed to be an art material at all\, and in instances when artists find meaningful content in improbable subject matter. Some of the pieces here employ images or objects that may challenge the conventional view of what counts as art\, and I kept coming back to those. This exhibition\, then\, represents one person’s path through a terrific field of entries. It is\, I hope\, a generous and thoughtful selection. I remain thoroughly impressed that when the Axis Gallery asked a wide\, unfiltered public to submit work\, the items that came in response were at once more surprising and more complementary than I had any right to expect. \n– Sharon Butler\, July 2026 \nABOUT THE JUROR\nSharon Butler is a painter and the founder of Two Coats of Paint\, an award-winning NYC blogazine about painting. She has held solo exhibitions in at CLEA RSKY\, Jennifer Baahng Gallery\, Theodore Gallery\, Pocket Utopia\, and Central Fine Arts (all in NYC); in Connecticut at Slater Memorial Museum\, Real Art Ways\, and Furnace Art on Paper Archive; and in the university galleries at University of Alabama\, University of Connecticut\, and SUNY Westchester. Her paintings are characterized by a tendency toward Casualism\, a term she coined in an article published in The Brooklyn Rail to describe an approach to painting that values imperfection\, incompleteness\, and process over traditional color theory\, pleasing composition\, and polished forms.\nHer work has been featured in publications such as The Brooklyn Rail\, Hyperallergic\, artcritical\, The New Criterion\, and New York Magazine. She has received awards from Creative Capital and the Warhol Foundation\, Yaddo\, Connecticut Commission on the Arts\, and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. \nShe lives and works in Long Island City\, Queens.
