SUMMARY:Pence Gallery Annual Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:Plant enthusiasts and gardeners alike are invited to attend the Pence Gallery’s 29th Annual Garden Tour on Sunday\, May 1\, from 12 – 5 PM. After a two-year break\, we are so glad to bring back this event which provides a great opportunity to visit with friends and family during the height of spring weather. Enjoy a self-guided tour through five gorgeous private gardens in Davis on the Pence’s annual Garden Tour. This year’s Tour features several homes with large gardens located on the outskirts of town\, as well as several gardens spread throughout Davis. Additionally\, learn about plant selection and landscaping from Yolo County Master Gardeners.  \n  \nTour highlights include gardens featuring a greenhouse and several ponds\, a mid-century design home\, copious fruit trees\, and a charming gazebo. Onsite\, watch plein air painters Leslie DuPratt\, Rhonda Egan\, Karen Fess-Uecker\, Kaye Gamper\, Chris Kidd\, Mary Kobashigawa\, and Marlene Lee create beautiful landscapes right before your eyes. From 12 – 3 PM\, Natalie Mackenzie will be spinning wool at one of the gardens. After the event\, their paintings will be displayed at the Pence from May 24 – June 24\, with a free reception on June 10\, 6 – 9 PM for the Garden Tour artists\, volunteers\, and the public. \n  \nAttendees can stop by the Pence at 4 PM for a tour by Director Natalie Nelson of Gayle BonDurant’s nature-inspired work in her exhibit Seasonal Gestures. We will have two other exhibits open for visitors to see and learn about\, On the Edge: CCA Clay and Marsha Schindler’s solo exhibit Life Whispers\, Listen Carefully. Visitors at the gallery may also pick up a gift bag with special discounts and treats (limited to the first 100 people).  \n  \nStarting April 1\, tickets are available for $25 members/$30 non-members ($35 day of event) and will be sold through Redwood Barn\, Newsbeat\, and the Pence Gallery (also online at www.pencegallery.org). VAC’s mission is to cultivate community joy by aligning socially conscious art with equitable practice. VAC produces works that represent the identities of the artists and team members involved with each production. Vacancy means there is room. \n  \nTaller Arte del Nuevo Amanecer (TANA) is co-producing and hosting this free\, outdoor staged reading at their space in Woodland. TANA will also premiere original screen prints inspired by the play. Join us an hour before the show for a welcome back reception with complimentary tacos\, aguas frescas\, visual art\, and live music. ¡Nos vemos allí! \n  \nAbout the play\nNative Gardens brings us to two adjoining backyards with two very different couples: the Del Valles and the Butleys. The new neighbors seem like they’ll get along until they discover a problem with the property line. As urgency to solve the issue ramps up\, we consider pertinent themes: ownership\, identity\, and privilege. Native Gardens is a vibrant comedy that asks us a vital question as we emerge from the pandemic: what is our relationship to the land we inhabit? \nCast features Beatriz Figueroa\, Robin Fisher\, Tim Gaffaney\, and Pano Roditis. DESCRIPTION:Miguel Alonso’s “Animal Screen Prints” will show from May 7 – June 3\, 2022. \nThe reception will take place on Friday\, May 13 from 6 – 8 pm at Logos Books in Davis. \nAddress: Logos Books\, 513 Second Street\, Davis\, CA\, 95616 \n. . . \nAbout Alonso\nHis parents encouraged Miguel Alonso to go to art classes at the age of 7.  At 14\, he began screen-printing at Taller Arte del Nuevo Amanecer (TANA) in his hometown of Woodland\, CA. \nMiguel found silk-screening techniques challenging at first\, but the staff at TANA encouraged him to continue to hone his skills\, including TANA cofounder Malaquias Montoya. Alonso has worked in this medium for thirteen years and has attended numerous workshops at TANA. Though he finds animal drawing difficult and challenging\, he also finds it intriguing. He has also studied techniques in wood and linoleum carving in order to create block prints. \nMiguel has created art work for Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) posters and the logo for the community program Youth Empowerment Summit of Yolo County (YES!). At 17\, he earned an award for “Democracy Works” and for outstanding leadership on the YES! planning committee.  He has also submitted work to competitions hosted by Stroll Through History\, Inc. in Woodland. He currently attends Woodland Community College and continues his studio work at TANA. \nYou can reach Miguel at miguel.alonso4587@gmail.com. Public receptions for local artists will also be held at various venues on that same evening in conjunction with the Davis Downtown 2nd Friday ArtAbout\, facebook.com/davisartabout. \nTANA is a collaborative partnership between the Chicana/o Studies department at UC Davis and the greater Woodland community. TANA offers a fully functioning silkscreen studio\, Chicano/Latino arts exhibition space\, and a teaching center for the arts. Through exhibiting\, printing\, and teaching\, TANA cultivates the cultural and artistic life of the community\, viewing the arts as essential to a community’s development and well-being. DESCRIPTION:Come discover some great art from young up-and-coming artists and support your local art scene! This free community event encourages young visual artists to display and sell their artwork\, ranging from prints and paintings to ceramics and jewelry. The Night Market will take place the evening of Friday\, May 20. Admission is free. The participating artists will be handling their own sales via cash\, checks\, and mobile pay apps (such as Venmo and Paypal). Plus\, they’ll get to keep all of their proceeds! \n  \nDate: Friday\, May 20 | 6–9 pm | Free admission \nAddress: Pence Gallery – 212 D Street\, Davis \n  \n— \n  \nWant to participate as an artist at the Night Market? \n  \nArtists ages 16–25 who are interested in selling their art should apply by emailing images and prices of their work to Katharine Schultz at pencegallery@gmail.com. The Pence provides a venue at $15/artist. Artists will need to bring their own table to set up a booth\, but we can provide chairs. Art sales are handled by participants and all proceeds go directly to the artist. Space is limited\, and the deadline to apply is May 2.

This is a perfect way to support your community gallery while completing your spring cleaning. We encourage donations during the drop off dates of May 22 – 26\, 11:30 AM – 4:30 PM. No need to call-just come in! All donations will receive a tax donation form. Please no glassware\, large furniture\, oversized posters\, or broken items. \nVisit the Gallery on the Treasure Sale dates below to explore the collection of items we’ve received and give them a new\, wonderful home. If you are looking for ‘treasure\,’ we’ll have tons!
