SUMMARY:Exploring Encaustics with Susan Silvester (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Learn the unique tips and tricks artist Susan Silvester has developed over 18 years of working with encaustics in this virtual workshop. Susan became enthralled with this medium after studying with Cynthia Winika\, the Encaustic Workshop Director/Teacher for R&F Handmade Paints. Susan will discuss good studio practices and introduce various substrates and grounds to use\, as well as demonstrate a variety of surface techniques\, including image transfers\, oil sticks\, and more. \nThis workshop is great for artists of all levels\, whether you’re exploring encaustics for the first time and want to learn the basics\, or for experienced artists who want to work alongside Susan during her demonstrations. Participants will receive an optional materials list\, and can either work alongside Susan or opt to simply watch and learn the encaustics process before committing to purchasing materials. Participants will also receive a recording of the workshop session. No encaustic experience is necessary. \nAny questions? SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Boyd Gavin Exhibit at John Natsoulas Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Our opening reception on will celebrate the renowned artist\, Boyd Gavin\, and the exciting exhibition dedicated to his paintings. \nThe exhibition will be open from June 8 to July 23\, 2022 at the John Natsoulas Gallery in Davis\, CA. All ages are welcome and admission is free. This is a rare opportunity to see fine paintings by one of the leading artists in our region. \n\n\n\n\nBoyd Gavin is a lifelong Sacramento resident. He received his B.A. from the University of Santa Cruz and his M.A. from California State University\, Sacramento. He has exhibited extensively\, including at the Crocker Art Museum\, the Caldwell Synder Gallery in San Francisco\, and the John Natsoulas Gallery. \nGavin’s seemingly effortless brushstrokes enliven canvases and draw the viewers close through geometric depth. His painterly style\, in the traditions of artists such as Cezanne\, allows depictions of very specific worlds. His tonalist hues combined with nostalgic imagery create distinct\, complex atmospheres that instantly transport viewers. \n\n\n\n\n“This show was largely inspired by the gardens\, pools\, and neon of West Sacramento’s once iconic motels. This vanished roadside culture\, the scourge of every city planner past and present\, offered travelers a theme park of ersatz domesticity built purposefully to the human scale.” \nGavin’s depictions of these now historic locations are\, in effect\, his own form of preservation. Through these familiar yet distant scenes of mid-century spaces\, Gavin reflects on the past and invites his viewers to join him on his journey of memory.

SUMMARY:Botanical Blueprints Workshop with Linda Clark Johnson
DESCRIPTION:You don’t need to be an artist to enjoy making beautiful blue cyanotypes! In this introductory class you’ll learn all the basics of this fun and easy alternative photographic technique. Using light sensitive chemicals you’ll expose prints of plants in the sun and process them in water. By the time you leave you’ll have 4 gorgeous 8 x 10 blueprints and the know-how to create more at home. Lots of beautiful plants are budding and blooming during each season of the year. Let’s celebrate the natural world by making botanical blueprints together! \n  \nInstructor Bio: \nLinda Clark Johnson creates original artwork using the cyanotype process. Cyanotype is a historical photographic technique that uses UV light for exposures and produces deep blue images. Linda prints using local plants in her sunny Sacramento backyard. She’s been having fun perfecting her experimental printing style and sharing her knowledge with students of all ages for many years. She holds a BA in Art\, a Masters in Education\, and a teaching credential.
