Themes range from social commentary and environmental awareness to personal narratives and cultural exploration.  These distinctive books highlight the art of storytelling through this exceptional medium. SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Stephen Kaltenbach: Alchemy of Space and Place
DESCRIPTION:Experience the distinctive ways that Stephen Kaltenbach\, the great pioneer of conceptual art\, transmutes space for two unique\, site-specific projects. His construction of a world-famous room design from the 1960s will complement a floor-to-ceiling\, assemblage collaboration with artist\, Seongmin Yoo. \nThe John Natsoulas Gallery is thrilled to be hosting the newest exhibition of Stephen Kaltenbach’s space altering\, installation art. Over the course of his career\, Stephen Kaltenbach has been a critical voice in Conceptual Art. Never limiting himself in his practice\, Kaltenbach has explored countless media in order to pose\, and occasionally answer\, questions about the fundamental definitions of art and the greater meaning of life. As a graduate student at UC Davis\, studying ceramics and painting at the height of the Funk Art movement\, Kaltenbach began to contemplate the traditions of fine art. During his meteoric rise in the late 1960s\, he showed in high-profile solo exhibitions at SFMOMA and the Whitney and in some of the most groundbreaking gallery exhibitions of the time. By 1970\, he relocated back to California\, where he became one the region’s most acclaimed artists. Since that time\, Kaltenbach has continued to elude definitive definition in his practice. Never abandoning his conceptual interests\, Kaltenbach has pursued a myriad of provocative projects using unconventional media or designs that require a cerebral interpretation by a thoughtful audience. \nThis exhibition blends the past and present. A full-scale construction of a room alteration\, akin to those of the 1960s\, will stand alongside an entirely original site-specific multi-media installation. Alongside fellow artist Seongmin Yoo\, Kaltenbach will create an assemblage installation featuring extensive drapery. The full-room installation offers viewers the opportunity to walk throughout the third floor of the gallery to participate in an immersive experience of color and light. \nThe opening reception on September 2nd at 7 pm will feature free refreshments and music. \n

SUMMARY:Art in Action Family Art Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Family Art Workshops: Look\, it’s new! \nThis summer\, the Pence Gallery invites children and their families to participate in the return of our family art workshops! Our program\, Art in Action\, offers kids ages 5-12 engaging art projects that prioritize having fun and learning together with parents or adult caregivers. Projects are designed to introduce kids to making their own artwork by experimenting with creative ideas and materials. Our resident art teacher will introduce you to the wealth of possibilities in our upstairs classroom. This is a drop-in program\, with no registration required.  \n  \nHow it works: \nThere is a fee per child of $5 for Pence members or $10 for non-members\, and you can pay at the door with cash or card. (Become a member starting at $65/year and save!) A parent or adult caregiver is required to stay\, but only has to pay for the project if they are also doing art. Stay as long or as short as you like over the two hour period. \n  \nWorkshop on Sunday\, September 17\, 1 – 3 PM: \nThis program offers exciting projects on the drop-in dates of Jul. 23\, Aug. 20\, and Sep. 17. The September workshop is Dot & Scrape Paintings!
