SUMMARY:(Dis)Continuity
DESCRIPTION:THIRD SPACE DAVIS. (dis)continuity explores the artists’ relationship to their mixed Mexican and American roots and how they influence how the artists move through the world today. When two cultures collide\, there are some things we hold on to\, some things we lose\, and some things we choose to change. For Elyse and Ro\, what we hold on to often shows up in the food we cook\, the values we uphold\, the labor we perform\, and the art that inspires us. The loss may sometimes happen through how our history is taught so narrowly to us in schools\, by centuries of systems that forcibly suppressed cultural expression\, or just by time passing and things changing. But we are also confronted with the opportunity to change\, to choose how we move forward as individuals who are part of a broader cultural exchange. In this show\, the artists reflect on their personal journeys of understanding their roots and how they navigate the present. 4p – 8p.

SUMMARY:Biophilia: Our Longing for Nature
DESCRIPTION:Biophilia: Our Longing for Nature \nExhibit: April 11 – June 4\, 2025 \nReception: April 11\, 6 – 9 PM \n  \nArtists for millennia have reflected upon nature as the inspiration and subject of their work. Our affiliation with animals\, plants\, and the wild spaces of our world is defined as ‘biophilia\,’ or love for living things. Twentieth-century naturalist E.O. Wilson offered the theory that humans are ‘hard-wired’ to build a complex relationship with the natural world in his book Biophilia (1984). In our 21st century world\, the question is how do we build relationships with a natural world that is under threat from climate change\, habitat destruction\, and other forces? \n  \nParticipating artists in Biophilia look to scenes both intimate and overarching for an understanding of the elemental forces beyond man’s knowledge. They point to the power of the earth’s resources\, and our need to comprehend their use and power. Other artists in Biophilia turn to animals for their symbolic and cultural resonance. The simple practice of painting en plein air\, directly in natural environments\, offers a continuing record of our need to capture the ephemeral beauty of landscapes that skirt our largely urban existence. \n  \nParticipating artists include Elaine Bowers\, Patrick Cosgrove\, Mark Goudy\, William Ishmael\, Carol Jenkins\, Linda Clark Johnson\, Qinqin Liu\, Liza Riddle\, and Marsha Schindler. \n  \nThe Pence Gallery is open 11:30 AM – 5 PM\, Tuesday through Sunday (closed Mondays). \n  \nImage: Linda Clark Johnson\, “Heat Wave” \n

SUMMARY:New Paintings by Adele Louise Shaw\, Contemplating “the nature of beauty and the beauty of nature”
DESCRIPTION:Adele’s paintings are inspired by the botanical world. She uses many materials–watercolors\, inks\, encaustic paint\, pens\, pencils–to fuse layers of color and techniques. Her art vibrates with undulating forms and earthly elements of fire\, air\, and water. Flowers—poppies\, sunflowers\, iris—compliment the abstract forms. Adele describes the process as “a poetic dance with materials which\, over its own\, ephemeral time\, is remembered by this imprint of paint.” \nReception\, May 9\, 6-9 pm

SUMMARY:A Weekend of Tule Teachings with Diana Almendariz and Family
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a weekend of Tule Teachings\, led by Diana Almendariz and her daughters Christina Almendariz and Ooti Maxine. Through two free\, public events – a field trip and a hands-on workshop – they will introduce the community to the natural and cultural importance of tule\, and share their understanding of how tule has been – and can be again – interwoven into our land\, waterways and our lives\, through stories and touch. \nWhile rooted in Wintun ecology and culture\, learning to care for tule benefits all those who live alongside it. With this in mind\, Diana complements her cultural storytelling with scientific knowledge\, and encourages a holistic approach to learning where all compatible perspectives are encouraged to thrive. \nField Trip to the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area | Suggested Donation please RSVP\nSaturday May 3\, 9 am-12pm\nCaravan begins at Yolo Bypass Wildlife Headquarters (45211 Co Rd 32B (aka Chiles Rd)\, Davis\, CA 95618). This auto-tour through the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area will introduce participants to the natural ecology of these wetlands\, along with its plant\, animal\, insect\, and bird familiars. The caravan will stop at 2 locations for exploration and discussion with Diana and other knowledge keepers of the marsh. Space is limited\, so ride-shares and carpools are strongly encouraged. \nPlease complete our registration form so we may gather information on how to best accommodate the needs of our community members. Further instructions (including agenda\, what to bring\, etc) will be emailed to registrants closer to the event. \nPlease register for this event here: bit.ly/tulefieldtrip \nMaking with Tule Hands-on Workshop | Suggested Donation please RSVP\nSunday\, May 4\, 3-6pm\nInternational House Davis\, backyard\nThe workshop will introduce participants to how tule has been used historically by Native Californian peoples\, and how we might care for it so it can take care of us. Created for beginners\, the workshop will help you feel comfortable with handling and using tule for making cordage and/or dolls. Light refreshments will be provided. \nPlease register for this event here: bit.ly/tuleteaching \nBios: \nDiana Almendariz is a naturalist\, culture-bearer\, storyteller\, and visual artist who has been working on the cultural and ecological revival and restoration of her Wintun homeland for over three decades. Her practice includes storytelling\, land-based pedagogy\, and traditional arts such as basket-weaving\, boat-making\, and more. She has been passing on this knowledge to her daughters who are accomplished cultural workers themselves. \nChristina is a Native Californian cultural practitioner of Maidu/Wintun/Hupa and Yurok heritage\, a Montessori teacher and mother of five\, who is passionate about nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards. \nOoti Maxine is a cultural practitioner and a visual artist\, who has grown up in her Maidu homeland in Sacramento\, and speaks of the many influences that shape contemporary life for Native Californians. \nThis project is a partnership of the YoloSol Collective\, the International House Davis\, the Yolo Basin Foundation\, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. This project has been made possible in part by a grant from the Alliance for California Traditional Arts\, in partnership with the California Arts Council\, a state agency\, the Walter & Elise Haas Fund\, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation\, and with support from Imagining America.
