SUMMARY:Art by Cathi Newlin & Toni Rizzo
DESCRIPTION:The Pence Gallery unites the fantastic work of painter Toni Rizzo and sculptor Cathi Newlin in a new joint exhibit. Toni Rizzo is a painter from Davis and the owner of the local art business\, Artiful World. Her signature style combines serene and psychedelic backgrounds with high realism portraiture. Featuring everything from wild animals to household furniture\, her work has a surreal\, timeless quality that evokes a feeling of ‘home.’ Cathi Newlin is a ceramic artist who lives in Sacramento. Over ten years ago\, she transitioned from doing functional pottery to making sculptural ceramics. While some may remember her expressive imaginary creatures on display in the Pence gift shop\, she also uses real animals\, perhaps inspired by her time as a zookeeper\, as the theme of her creative work. \n  \nBoth artists have a light-hearted\, playful take on artmaking that leads them to explore imagery full of fantasy\, surrealism\, or comedic exaggeration. We invite you to enjoy the exhibit upstairs in our Andresen Learning Center gallery at the Pence. \n  \nExhibit dates: March 3 – April 30\, 2023 \nReception: Friday\, March 10\, 6 – 9 PM (free admission) \nAddress: Pence Gallery | 212 D Street\, Davis\, CA 95616 \nGallery hours: 11:30 AM – 5 PM\, Tuesday – Sunday (closed Mondays) \n  \nImage: C. SUMMARY:Moments in Time & Space
DESCRIPTION:Moments in Time & Space is a new exhibit opening on April 14 at the Pence Gallery. Ceramic artists Claudia Tarantino\, Daniel Alejandro Trejo\, and Bill Heiderich share an interest in capturing the changing quality of time. In her exquisite trompe l’oeil sculpture\, Claudia Tarantino attempts “to capture moments in time\, past and present.” Representing keepsakes such as photographs\, toys\, and children’s shoes\, she creates tableau to access our collective memories. Bill Heiderich reinterprets vessels by using shapes derived from traditional pottery. As stage sets of movement and tension\, Heiderich is interested in change and the passage of time seen in ordinary objects. Daniel Alejandro Trejo’s ceramic forms play with enclosure\, as they frame internal and external space.  \n  \nMoments in Time & Space: Bill Heiderich\, Claudia Tarantino\, Daniel Alejandro Trejo  \nExhibit dates: April 14 – June 12\, 2023 \nOpening reception: Friday\, April 14\, 6 – 9 PM (free) \nCeramics reception: Friday\, April 28\, 6 – 9 PM (free\, in conjunction with the annual Natsoulas Gallery’s ceramics conference) \nAddress: Pence Gallery | 212 D Street\, Davis\, CA 95616 \nGallery hours: 11:30 AM – 5 PM\, Tuesday – Sunday (closed Mondays) \n  \nThis exhibit is generously sponsored by Bill & Nancy Roe. \n  \nImage: Claudia Tarantino\, “Moments in Time”

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Maxine Solomon
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to attend an Artist Talk by Maxine Solomon at the Pence Gallery on Saturday\, April 15\, 2 – 3 PM. Join the artist for an engaging talk on creativity\, artistic process\, and inspiration\, as she addresses these issues relating to her current series of paintings on view at the Pence from April 11 – May 7\, 2023. This is a free event\, no registration required (suggested $10 donation). \n  \nIn her exhibit\, Somewhere Beyond Time\, Maxine Solomon’s current series of nonrepresentational oil paintings are about exploration\, spontaneity\, and energy. She approaches her canvases with no preconceived plan\, preferring to work intuitively with large brushes and sweeps of moving color\, alternating between building up and scraping back thick layers of paint. The final energetic atmospheres are often reminiscent of the natural phenomenon she experienced while living abroad\, as well as in Northern California. \n  \nImage: Maxine Solomon\, “A World Beyond Our World”
