SUMMARY:Crackle and Glow: Raku Ceramics
DESCRIPTION:The Artery presents “Crackle and Glow: Raku Ceramics.” This vibrant exhibit features Brigitte Chertok’s naked raku and Paula Bellacera’s raku bird masks. Reception\, Oct. 11\, 6-9.  Naked raku\, Brigitte’s choice\, is a technique that uses all four elements – fire\, earth\, air and water.  Producing this type of raku was very exciting.  The smooth\, silky burnished surface of naked raku mimics natural polished stone\, which makes touching almost irresistible. Paula’s raku masks echo ancient civilization artistic celebration of animal spirits connection to humans. Another link to early cultures is their dependence on fire—also an essential to producing the unique quality of raku. The unpredictability of this ceramic technique is exciting and sometimes unexpected.  Raku is the art of imperfection.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Outside In
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an opening reception of Outside In\, an exhibition by John Angell and Cheryl Gleason. \nJohn’s BodyWork collection is taken from his own X-rays and MRIs which he colorized and manipulated. They can read as almost Abstract Expressionist or Pop Art pieces in some cases. While the images are extremely clinical\, they are also very intimate\, actually looking beneath the skin. They are a commentary on the aging process as well as an explosion of color and/or internal landscapes. \nCheryl Gleason primarily works with oil and cold wax on panel\, although she also explores encaustic\, upcycled materials\, mixed media\, and more recently\, acrylic. Regardless of the medium\, her goal remains consistent: to craft pieces that harmonize color\, texture\, lines\, and mark making to evoke emotions\, memories\, or simply a smile. \nThe artists\, John Angell and Cheryl Gleason\, will attend the opening reception\, 5:30-8 p.m. Friday October 4\, coinciding with the downtown Woodland First Friday event. Live music\, light refreshments\, and Yolo County wine will round out the reception. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nThe artwork can also be viewed online at yoloarts.org/online-galleries \nOutside In continues at Gallery 625 through Dec 2. \nGallery 625 hosts exhibitions and receptions every other month and is located at 625 Court Street in Woodland\, in Yolo County’s Erwin Meier Administration building. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday\, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment. \nFor more information or to purchase artwork contact YoloArts at 530-309-6464 or ya@yoloarts.org. \nImage credits: \n\nJohn Angell\nCheryl Gleason
