SUMMARY:Author talk: Clarence Major
DESCRIPTION:Clarence Major will join us on Thursday\, June 1\, 2023 from 6:30-7:30pm to discuss his new novel\, The Glint of Light.  This event will take place at The Avid Reader bookstore at 617 2nd Street in Downtown Davis\, CA. \nAbout the Book \nMark Smith is a sensitive thirty-seven-year-old environmental scientist of mixed race. He tries to come to terms with his mother’s painful death as he goes through the stages of grief. Mark is also reassessing his relationship with his gay twin sister\, Maria\, a lawyer. After several failed relationships with women in college\, Mark\, while at his mother’s funeral in Chicago\, reconnects with his high school girlfriend\, Christy\, an artist who paints self-portraits. He now believes he has finally found true and lasting love\, but the country’s civil unrest and political division plague the opportunity at a second chance. Major has devised a powerful novel about the cumulative unease and random violence that grip American life and ask what we should do about it. \nAbout the Author \nClarence Major is a novelist\, poet and painter. His novels include Dirty Bird Blues (a Penguin Classic)\, Such Was the Season\, a Literary Guild selection; My Amputations\, winner of the Western States Book Award; Painted Turtle: Woman with Guitar\, a New York Times Book Review Notable Book of the Year; and other novels. He has contributed to The New Yorker\, The New York Times\, The Harvard Review\, and dozens of other periodicals. Major won a National Book Award Bronze Medal and many other awards. He was elected to The Georgia State Writers Fall of Fame in 2021. Major is a distinguished professor emeritus of twentieth century American literature at the University of California at Davis. \n\n

SUMMARY:Author Event: K.X. Song
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to host debut author K.X. Song for the launch of her young adult novel\, An Echo in the City.  This event will take place on Wednesday\, June 21\, 2023 from 6-7pm. \nAbout the Author \nK. X. Song is a diaspora writer with roots in Hong Kong and Shanghai. K. X. currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area. An Echo in the City is the author’s debut novel. K.X. invites you to learn more at kxsong.com. \nAbout the Book \nTwo star-crossed teenagers fall in love during the Hong Kong protests in this searing contemporary novel about coming-of-age in a time of change. \nSixteen-year-old Phoenix knows her parents have invested thousands of dollars to help her leave Hong Kong and get an elite Ivy League education. They think America means big status\, big dreams\, and big bank accounts. But Phoenix doesn’t want big; she just wants home. The trouble is\, she doesn’t know where that is…until the Hong Kong protest movement unfolds\, and she learns the city she’s come to love is in danger of disappearing. \nSeventeen-year-old Kai sees himself as an artist\, not a filial son\, and certainly not a cop. But when his mother dies\, he’s forced to leave Shanghai to reunite with his estranged father\, a respected police officer\, who’s already enrolled him in the Hong Kong police academy. Kai wants to hate his job\, but instead\, he finds himself craving his father’s approval. And when he accidentally swaps phones with Phoenix and discovers she’s part of a protest network\, he finds a way to earn it: by infiltrating the group and reporting their plans back to the police. \nAs Kai and Phoenix join the struggle for the future of Hong Kong\, a spark forms between them\, pulling them together even as their two worlds try to force them apart. But when their relationship is built on secrets and deception\, will they still love the person left behind when the lies fall away? \n  \n
