CHAOS COMES CALLING is a harrowing tale of how political polarization threatens America’s social fabric\, told through the differing fates of two communities in the throes of ideological and partisan battle. \nAbout the Book \nDonald Trump’s November 2016 electoral victory presaged four years of demagogy\, presidential name-calling\, and – ten months into a pandemic – an incitement to violence that led a mob of thousands to descend on the Capitol in Washington\, DC. Fueled by suspicion\, conspiracy\, and bigotry\, a faction of Americans with extreme beliefs fought to seize control. But the biggest effect of this right-wing wave may not have been on our national politics\, but on the local governments of communities around the country. \nIn CHAOS COMES CALLING\, Abramsky tells the parallel stories of two communities: Shasta County\, CA\, and Sequim\, WA\, where toxic alliances of QAnoners\, anti-vaxxers\, Christian nationalists\, militia supporters\, and other denizens of the far-right have worked to take control of the levers of power. While Sequim ultimately recalibrated in 2021\, returning to a more rational\, less violent baseline\, Shasta County has descended further into a climate of intolerance and toxic divisiveness. \nBy illuminating how the polarization of national politics has seeped into local affairs\, Abramsky vividly captures how extremism upended life in these communities and transformed the country’s politics. Come hear three historical fiction novelists discuss how issues such as women’s rights\, religious tolerance\, and anti-discrimination resonate from the past in modern historical fiction. \nWith experience writing in periods and contexts as disparate as war-plagued Europe in the 1480s\, a quirky 1970s circus\, a captive woman in the Trojan War\, a 13 th century BCE Hittite queen\, and the Flying Nightingales of WWII\, this author threesome will entertain you as we take on the past and the ways historical fiction illuminates our current world. \nAbout the Authors \nTim Schooley \nTim Schooley’s first job out of high school was as a circus clown with Ringling Bros.\, Barnum & Bailey Circus. When he discovered he was not that funny\, he went to college at UC Santa Barbara and then law school at UC Berkeley. He spent 35 years as an appellate lawyer\, taught appellate law at UC Davis Law School for 10 years\, and worked first as a “writ attorney” and then as the managing attorney of the California Court of Appeal\, Third Appellate District\, in Sacramento. All along\, he wrote fiction\, but waited until his retirement to publish his debut novel\, The Wool Translator\, which follows a Christian boy and a Muslim girl across religiously fractured Europe of the 1480s. Tim’s forthcoming novel\, The Circus of the Vanishing Elephant\, is based (very loosely) on his employment as a circus clown. Tim lives with his wife in Fair Oaks. DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating local author\, Justine Villanueva’s latest children’s book: Munga and Lola on Sunday October 27th at 1:00 PM. \nAbout the Author \nJustine Eva Li Villanueva traces her ancestral roots to Bukidnon\, home of her paternal grandmother who was a descendant of Apu Mansaliwa of the Bukidnon tribe of Kalasungay. She is an immigrant learning to dwell in Davis\, California\, home of the Wintun-Patwin\, with her husband and two sons. Justine’s creative work focuses on decolonization\, indigenization\, and social justice. JustineVillanueva.com. \nAbout the Book \nMungan and Lola is a story about love and care between the child Mungan and her lola (grandmother). One day\, Lola becomes sad. With the help of her mothers and siblings\, Mungan enthusiastically engages in the family rituals of care to understand Lola’s sadness and bring back Lola’s smile. \nMungan and Lola takes its inspiration from a Bukidnon epic about Mungan\, the first Bukidnon babaylan (indigenous healer)\, who summons the healing power of sunlight by playing the traditional gongs. The babaylan Mungan also leads the Bukidnon people to their paradise. Thus\, Mungan and Lola echoes the themes of personal and collective healing\, belonging\, and the ancestors. \nIn Mungan and Lola\, the child Mungan\, named after the babaylan\, engages in rituals of care—cooking linagpang (an indigenous Filipino soup); performing hilot (an ancient form of touch therapy); and playing kulintang and other indigenous musical instruments to encourage dancing—to help Lola feel better. Mungan eventually discovers the reason for Lola’s sadness and\, in the process\, hears about Lola’s stories of her homeland and immigration to the United States. \nMungan and Lola shows us the healing powers of (indigenous) music and dance which connect us to the world and ourselves\, and the healing powers of oral storytelling and remembering our ancestors and where we come from. \nBeyond exploring the themes of healing\, this book also offers a starting point for the exploration of many other cultural and historical themes relevant to the Fil Am community. \nMungan and Lola is written in hay(na)ku which is tercet-based poetic format created by Filipino American poet Eileen Tabios. Mungan and Lola also highlights three Filipino languages: Bisaya-Cebuano\, Filipino\, and Binukid. \n
