SUMMARY:Author Talk: Catriona McPherson
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with local author Catriona McPherson\, to hear about her most recent novel The Dead Room. \nAbout the Book \nIn this atmospheric thriller from Catriona McPherson\, a young widow seeking refuge from her grief wades into the mists at the far end of memory lane—where something even darker awaits. \nReeling from the death of her husband\, thirty-something audiobook narrator Lindsay Hale retreats to her Scottish hometown and the comforts of old times. The bungalow where she grew up is just as she left it\, next to the scrapyard her family still owns. But something is wrong…something beyond grief. \nSomething she can only glimpse from the corner of her eye. \nLindsay’s brother and best friend are there to welcome her back. An elderly widow helps Lindsay make sense of her new normal\, and a kind man hints at unexpected possibilities. But when her widow friend vanishes\, only Lindsay seems to notice. And while she starts “recognizing” strangers\, she begins forgetting familiar faces. \nEvery night\, as Lindsay’s dream house fills with nightmares\, she wonders whether she’s truly unraveling—or if something more sinister’s at play. Buried secrets surface and reality bends\, forcing Lindsay to face the terrifying truth that her new haven isn’t so safe after all. \nAbout the Author \nBorn in Scotland\, Catriona McPherson (she/her) studied at the University of Edinburgh\, where she earned her PhD in linguistics. She worked briefly as an academic but has been a full-time fiction writer since 2005. Catriona has written all over the mystery genre—historicals\, comedies\, dark psychological thrillers—and her work has won Anthony\, Agatha\, Lefty\, and Macavity awards. Her novels have also been short-listed for Edgar and Mary Higgins Clark awards\, as well as the UK Dagger. Catriona is a proud lifetime member and former national president of the Sisters in Crime writing association. \nIn 2010\, she immigrated to the US\, settling in Northern California. There\, she lives on twenty scruffy acres with her scientist husband and an elderly black cat. When not writing (or reading)\, Catriona likes to garden\, cook\, bake\, ride her bike\, do yoga\, go open-water swimming\, and visit the old country—especially in the summer\, when California is just too hot.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Jessica Guerrieri
DESCRIPTION:From the award-winning\, bestselling author of Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea\, Jessica Guerrieri returns with Both Can Be True — a powerful new novel about sisterhood\, motherhood\, and the complicated truths women carry. Join Jessica in conversation with her sister\, Cara Cutter\, for an intimate and heartfelt evening exploring the real-life bonds that inspired this story. \nCelebrate publication day with The Avid Reader at the Veterans Memorial Theatre on May 19\, 2026\, from 7–9pm. Tickets include a signed copy of Both Can Be True. Expect an honest\, deeply personal conversation about writing\, family\, and the stories that bring us back to one another — followed by audience Q&A and book signing. \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nAbout the Book \nWhen a local mother goes missing\, two estranged sisters are pulled back into each other’s lives and forced to confront old wounds\, fractured trust\, and the many ways a woman can disappear in plain sight. \nFrankie is the funny one\, full of restless energy and sharp edges\, the sister who got sober\, opened a bookstore\, and slipped into a version of domestic life without ever fully confronting the past. Mere is the steady one\, the caretaker\, a mother quietly unraveling under the demands of her neurodivergent daughter and the loneliness of a marriage to a husband who sees the world through an entirely different lens. \nFor the Gilmore sisters\, losing their mother to cancer at a young age gave them a brief window of closeness they’ve never been able to reclaim. But over the years\, a mentally ill father\, the unspoken trauma of sexual violence\, and the different vices they turned to for survival fractured their bond and created a divide of resentment neither of them could bring themselves to cross. When a woman in Frankie’s social circle disappears\, the sisters are pulled into a shared reckoning and can no longer deny the past that has shaped so much of their present. \nSet against the backdrop of a quiet Northern California mountain town\, this gripping and emotionally layered novel unfolds in alternating perspectives\, revealing the many ways women vanish inside motherhood\, addiction\, marriage\, and shame. Told with raw honesty and wry compassion\, Jessica Guerrieri’s sophomore novel is a story of sisterhood\, acceptance\, the unspoken truths we carry\, and the redemptive power of bridging pain into connection.
