SUMMARY:Author Talk: Kate Washington
DESCRIPTION:About the Book \nA memoir of jumping feet first into a new life\, reclaiming long-forgotten joys\, and discovering a renewed sense of self after divorce\, offering a fresh vision of midlife to women who have abandoned themselves in service of others As Kate Washington approached her 50th birthday\, she was also contemplating ending a 23-year marriage in which she had become so focused on serving others that she’d lost her sense of self. To find herself again\, she embarked on what she calls the 50 Dunks Project. The rules: Go to 50 different bodies of water—swimming holes\, hot springs\, rivers\, lakes\, creeks\, and oceans. Immerse fully\, head under water. Chronicle the dunk with a picture and a post. Complete the challenge by the time she turned 50. Largely set in Kate’s native California but taking us as far as southern France\, dunking us in the waters of the American River\, Lake Tenaya\, Big Chico Creek\, the Rive Gard\, and beyond\, Kate shares the highlights of her 50 Dunk challenge—including dozens of fantastic\, semi-secret places to swim. Along the way\, she combines self-examination\, wry humor\, lyrical description\, and cultural critique to illuminate the factors that so often cause women to lose themselves. Midstream makes the case for embracing joy and pleasure as a necessary act of resistance\, both for individuals and for the culture at large. \nAbout the Author \nKate Washington is the author of Midstream: A Life Remade in 50 Swims (Beacon Press\, 2026) and Already Toast: Caregiving and Burnout in America (Beacon Press\, 2021). She is a frequent speaker on the systemic challenges facing family caregivers and a longtime freelance writer whose writing has appeared in The New York Times\, TIME\, HuffPost\, Eater\, and many other publications. She holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University and lives in Sacramento with her two daughters\, one very friendly dog\, and one very unfriendly cat. Connect with her at kawashington.com.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Clara Ward
DESCRIPTION:About the Book \nYou don’t need to reach Mars to reach your dreams. Robbed of their chance at leaving Earth to pursue green-energy innovations\, Ryn embraces new dreams—fighting deep sea threats in conjunction with a giant cephalopod. It’s 2139 in the Cali-Coastal Corporate Zone\, and Ryn struggles with their own body and brain as they fight to survive five days locked up with academic rivals and the military-backed billionaires who’ve misled them all since their teenage years. Ryn needs an exit strategy but doesn’t know whether to trust Akira\, the hacker-spy who may have saved their life\, or Jay\, the geeky military rebel with a secret stash of hot chocolate. Not to mention\, Jay keeps falling asleep in their bed\, and Ryn’s not sure if either of them is interested in more—but at least they like the same shows! Five Days. One Ocean. Unlikely allies connect to Dream the Deep. \nAbout the Author \nClara Ward spends their days in or near the Pacific Ocean in California. Their previous novel\, Be the Sea\, takes place earlier in the same timeline as Dream the Deep\, and both explore sea creature perspectives\, marine technology\, and chosen family. Their shorter works are featured in The Neurodiversiverse: Alien Encounters\, Strange Horizons\, and Tales & Feathers by Augur. When not using words to teach or tell stories\, Clara uses wood\, fiber\, and glass to make practical or completely impractical objects. More of their words along with crafted creations can be found at: https://clarawardauthor.wordpress.com.
