Bennett has also competed in the National Flute Association Young Artist Competition and the Fischoff Competition. \nPassionate about collaborating with communities of color through classical music\, Bennett traveled to Chile and Ghana in 2019 for residencies at Centro Cultural San Antonio and the Matic Music Club where she taught flute\, music theory and pedagogy classes. She curated Honesty of Voice\, a five-part conversation series targeting a dynamic and diverse set of flutists who shared their professional journeys and insight into balancing life and the profession. As an artist-mentor\, Dr. Bennett embraces the opportunity to speak publicly about social issues. In 2020 she developed a four-part Facebook conversation series—Let’s Talk—amplifying the Black experience through the lens of classical music. DESCRIPTION:Meghan Bennett\, flute – Artist-in-Residence \n\nArtistry is elusive and defies definition. Still\, the presence of artistry is unmistakable. Artists fuse high-level craftsmanship with humanity and honesty. This process of connecting one’s craft with one’s inner self differs greatly depending on the artist; however\, honesty and vulnerability remain a constant in the process. The Valencia Baryton Project has dedicated itself to the performance of music written for an ancient and little-known instrument\, the baryton. At the heart of the ensemble is the traditional formation in trio–baryton\, viola\, and violoncello–for which Haydn wrote 123 works of outstanding beauty during his time as the court composer for the Prince Esterhazy of Austria.

SUMMARY:UC Davis Concert Band: “Luminance”
DESCRIPTION:At the center of this concert is a new composition for wind ensemble by Sacramento-based composer Shuying Li titled “Luminance\,” which the UC Davis Concert Band helped commission thanks to the Rucker Family Trust’s Endowed Fund for Concert Band Support. The composer writes of her piece\, “At its core\, the work addresses issues relevant to contemporary society. By exploring themes of hope and despair\, inclusion and exclusion\, and power and powerlessness\, the piece seeks to provide a platform for reflection and conversation. DESCRIPTION:Program\nCapoeira • Juan Diego Díaz\, director\nfeaturing Mestre Cabello \nGamelan • Heni Savitri\, director \nMariachi • Tito Talamantes\, director \nSamba School • Brian Rice\, director \nFree \nAbout Mestre Cabello\nBorn in Piracicaba\, São Paulo\, Brazil\, Mestre Cabello dedicates his life to the rhythms\, instruments\, songs and dances of the Afro-Brazilian culture. Mestre Cabello has been practicing capoeira since the 1980’s\, performing and teaching around the world since 1990. A professional capoeira angola teacher with more than 30 years experience\, he is proud to be a student and senior practitioner under the world famous master Mestre João Grande. \nHe also studies Afro-Brazilian rhythms and dance as a disciple of Professora Emilia Biancardi and master drummer Jorge Alabê. Currently Mestre Cabello directs both the OuroVerde cultural farm and the Barracão d’Angola cultural center in Serra Grande Bahia Brazil\, where he promotes Brazilian culture creation\, presentation\, education\, and preservation. \nHis aim and life mission is to engage and deepen public appreciation and support for Capoeira Angola\, use cultural knowledge and practices to preserve the natural environment\, assure bright sustainable future for local children through artistic and social development\, and to promote a grassroots-organized social and economic community development. Twice a year Mestre Cabello organizes the international event called DanceBatukeira where he hosts practitioners and teachers from around the world. In the 23rd DanceBatukeira\, in January of 2015\, Mestre Cabello graduated seven Professors of Capoeira Angola. He now has representatives in five different locations including in Brazil\, Mexico\, and the United States.
