DESCRIPTION:Ten years ago\, shortly after moving from San Jose to Davis\, while attending one of the early meetings that had been called by citizens wanting to discuss with Chief Pytel his work to promote diversity in the Davis Police Department\, I couldn’t help but notice the only other photographer on the porch. Naturally\, we struck up a conversation. \n\nDavid M. Greenwald\, as it turned out had launched daily publication online of The Davis Vanguard a few years earlier and\, with his wife Cecilia Escamilla Greenwald and a few devoted volunteers were providing the city’s only regular news and commentary on local politics and other matters of civic interest\, such as housing and the performance and qualifications elected and appointed officials.\n\nWhy am I telling you all this?\n\nI am a member of Vanguard Board of Directors and dedicated to its mission.\n\nNext week\, October 19\, an all-star lineup of criminal justice celebrities\, including Alex Vitale\, Professor of Sociology\, who has for 30-years written about policing and consulting with both police departments and human rights organizations will be speaking at The Vanguard Annual Gala.\n\nAs a non-profit organization\, Vanguard is presenting and sponsoring the evening. If you support our mission you can be a big help\, first by purchasing a ticket or two\, (a tax-deductible donation) and\, if you will\, two more things: commensurate with the importance of our honorees and speakers\, we’re hoping to have press coverage\, so it becomes essential we fill the hall with an enthusiastic audience of friends of Vanguard and friends of our friends of Vanguard.\n\n \nCan you put the specs of our Gala on your calendar (with an alert reminder!)\, Thursday\, October 19\, 6PM\, at THE BANK\, 7th and J\, Sacramento? Please remind any friends you may have invited\, now and at least once more\, prior to the big night!\n \nIf\, by any chance\, anyone you invite is not as familiar as you with the watchdog\, whistle-blowing mission of The Vanguard\, please fill them in\, of course personalizing your own references and motivation. FWIW\, some of our friends have found it helpful in describing their enthusiasm to use a subtractive\, rather than descriptive method. For example (put this in your own words\, of course)\, imagine the home town of one of the world’s most important public universities\, the self-styled “bicycle capital of the world\,” proudly your home … with no tv station\, little in the way of professional local political editorials and commentary\, scant coverage of such vital issues as the plight/plague of the unhoused\, outdated and stifling legalities\, mental health treatment\, to name but a few.\n \nImagine further\, no access to what really goes on in our criminal courts\, our jails and prisons\, and the work of people who devote their lives to curbing unfair\, often illegal\, injustice and bias. Nor honest investigation into and reporting to us of the truth behind the often-misleading guidance of public officials.\n \nOh\, the second thing? This is the fun part. On your own social media (and please do not be shy about using the most popular ones)\, please invite everyone you can reach to join you at the 2023 Vanguard Gala in Sacramento! Then\, when you’re done\, ask your kids or grandchildren to do the same.
