SUMMARY:Second Saturday Concert Series: Internationally Known Synthesizer Experts
DESCRIPTION:Peregrine School starts the 2023 Second Saturday Concert Series on Saturday\, May 13\, with acclaimed synthesizer experts\, authors\, and musicians David Battino and Mark Vail. The pair will perform as WSDOR (Within Shouting Distance of Reality). Prior to the concert\, Battino and Vail will demonstrate some of the unique sounds and performance techniques their instruments offer. They’ll also discuss inexpensive ways to get into electronic music and how making it opens your ears to a whole new world of sound. Audience questions and participation are encouraged. The presentation begins at 10:00am and the concert follows from 11:00am to noon. Guests are welcome to attend either or both events. The Series is supported\, in part\, by a grant from the City of Davis Arts & Cultural Affairs program. Additionally\, special thanks to Trader Joes. There is a suggested $20 donation\, but no one will be turned away due to a lack of funds. \nDavid Battino majored in philosophy at Oberlin but found his epiphany in the college’s electronic music studios. Suddenly it was possible to create both the instruments and the music\, and he began writing for magazines to share that excitement. He joined Keyboard in 1994\, was the founding editor of Music & Computers\, and wrote the popular “Adventures in DIY” column for Electronic Musician. In 2005\, he co-wrote The Art of Digital Music\, a book and DVD of interviews with 50 artists\, inventors\, and futurists. Music Tech called it “truly entertaining and informative on both philosophical and technical levels.” \nBattino keeps his ears peeled for new music technology\, often turning it into novel instruments to share in his “Synth Hacks” column for Waveform magazine. A recent column introduced SwineWAV\, a MIDI-controlled sample player he built inside a pink plastic pig. Playful interfaces\, David believes\, give people “permission” to make music. \nAs a senior in high school in 1972\, Mark Vail learned of the existence of music synthesizers from an article Wendy Carlos wrote for The Last Whole Earth Catalog. Vail earned an MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media at Mills College in 1983. He joined the editorial staff at Keyboard magazine in 1988\, assumed the Vintage Synths column started by synthesizer pioneer Bob Moog (1934-2005) in 1992\, and continued writing the column after leaving Keyboard in 2001. Mark is the author of Vintage Synthesizers (1993\, 2000)\, The Hammond Organ: Beauty in the B (1997\, 2002)\, and The Synthesizer (2014). He developed and taught a computer music class based on Propellerhead Reason for middle and high school students from 2003 to 2015\, and he has performed electronic music at SFO\, Golden Gate Park\, Sacramento Audio Waffle\, Brutal Sound Effect\, and the Don Buchla Memorial Concert. Vail jams with other musicians as often as possible. \nThe gates of Peregrine’s South campus (2650 Lillard Drive\, Davis) will open at approximately 9:45am. SUMMARY:The Quitters Trio with special guest Joe Craven
DESCRIPTION:The Quitters trio consists of a right-side up finger picker (Stevie Coyle)\, an upside down flat picker (Glenn “Houston” Pomianek)\, and an upright bassist (Chris Kee). They were three original members of The Waybacks quintet\, and Chris Kee and Glenn Houston were the long-time bassist and lead guitarist for Houston Jones. Now they play together\, on their own\, hence the name\, “The Quitters”. They deliver a memorable performance spiced with humor and serendipity. https://www.quittersduo.com \nGlenn Houston’s guitarist influences range from Michael Bloomfield to Doc Watson\, as shows in his mastery of both the acoustic and electric guitar. Glenn has been voted Best Guitarist by the Northern California Bluegrass Society and has shared billing with Emmylou Harris\, Merle Haggard\, Earl Scruggs\, Doc and Merle Watson\, Willie Nelson and countless other famous artists. He co-founded the Waybacks in 1999 with Stevie Coyle and Chojo Jacques\, and was co-founder of the powerhouse Americana band\, Houston Jones. \nStevie Coyle was inspired to take up finger-picking guitar by the first Hot Tuna album. After degrees in Theatre and Theology he hit the road with The Royal Lichtenstein Circus\, doing comedy\, magic\, wire-walking\, sword-swallowing\, and juggling. He collaborated with Roy Zimmerman for 25 years\, including the folk tribute / parody band\, The Foremen\, and comedy duo\, The Reagan Bros. In 1999 he co-founded The Waybacks and toured with them through 2007. Since then he has released a solo CD and opened his own high-end acoustic guitar shop\, Mighty Fine Guitars\, in Lafayette\, CA. In addition to his stellar musical career\, Stevie also claims fame as an actor and comedian\, including appearances on Cheers and The Comedy Store. \nChris Kee is a classically trained cellist who studied ethnomusicology at Yale\, Chris was the original bass player with the Waybacks\, and bassist and principal songwriter for Houston Jones. Much in demand as a hired gun\, he has performed with Buddy Miller (including appearances with Buddy\, Emmylou Harris\, Patty Griffin\, and Shawn Colvin)\, Jim Lauderdale\, Norah Jones\, Jim Campilongo\, the late lamented Ralph Carney\, and crypto- Klezmer sorceress Michelle Alany\, among many others. \nSpecial guest\, Joe  Craven \nJoe Craven is an American freestyle folk\, world and roots music multi-instrumentalist\, singer and educator. He is the Director of RiverTunes Music Camp and a Co-Director of the Wintergrass Youth Academy. He plays a wide variety of string instruments\, including fiddle\, mandolin\, ukulele\, tres\, cavaquinho\, balalaika\, as well as percussion\, including a pickling jar\, a credit card\, or a jawbone. Craven is a well known sight at acoustic music festivals and\, for many years\, was violinist and percussionist for the David Grisman Quintet.[1] Craven lists some of his influences being Jimi Hendrix\, dumpster diving\, Hermeto Pascoal\, thrift stores\, Frank Zappa\, educator and aesthetician John Dewey\, beachcombing\, Carl Stalling\, Eddie Palmieri\, field recordings\, Tiny Moore\, Los Pleneros De Viente Uno\, Darol Anger and The Horseflies. \nCraven has played with many notable musicians including Jerry Garcia\, Stephane Grappelli\, Alison Brown\, Rob Ickes and David Lindley. He performs solo and in different sizes and versions of his own projects\, most notably The Joe Craven Trio. \n  \n
