DESCRIPTION:So much is happening in our country and the world right now that is heartbreaking. Everything feels less stable and less safe. It’s hard to listen to the news without dissolving into a pool of anxiety. Harder still to find moments of joy\, or grace. \nI-House wants to change that. So we’ve invited artist Jesikah Maria Ross to dream up another interactive\, art-filled gathering that brings folks together to play\, share stories and lift each other up. It’s called Hope Café. She piloted the event last year\, and we think our community could use another one right about now. \nAt Hope Café you’ll get some time away from the news cycle and instead experience:\n– Local artists jazzing up the space with music and poetry\n– Lighthearted activities that spark curiosity and delight\n– Conversations that build connection in creative\, human ways \nMay’s Hope Café features world jazz duo Nick Carvajal and Jim Frink\, as well as the youth acapella quartet Davis Local Vocals—Evie Barnett\, Ruby Schwerin\, Charlotte DelFavero\, and Matthew Vallero. \nAll of it unfolds in a warm\, welcoming space – complete with snacks! SUMMARY:Willow Basketry: Weave a Gathering Basket
DESCRIPTION:Basketry is a time-honored craft rooted in place\, patience\, and practice. In this hands-on workshop led by Samantha Iacobello\, participants will learn the basics of “Stick and Strand” style basketry and create a 10” Berry Basket with a handle. Your finished basket will be perfect for garden harvests\, trips to the farmers market\, or gathering forest school treasures. Participants will have the opportunity to work with willow varieties sourced by Samantha from local watersheds\, including ‘Creek Willow\,’ ‘Sandbar Willow\,’ and ‘Purple Osier Willow’ along with cultivars and landrace varieties grown in her gardens. \nAll tools and materials will be provided. This workshop requires hand strength\, the ability to do repetitive hand movements\, and comfort sitting on the ground for extended periods of time. \nParticipants are encouraged to bring a cushion or low lawn chair for seating\, as well as a favorite utility or pocket knife if you have one. Please bring your own lunch\, snacks\, and drinking water – we will be enjoying a lunch break together halfway through the day. \nSliding scale cost of $70-$100 (pay what you can). Ages 12+ welcome. DESCRIPTION:The Photography Club of Davis will meet on Thursday\, May 21\, at 7:10pm in the Blanchard Room of the Mary L. Stephens Library at 314 East 14th Street in Davis. The meeting will feature a photo critique of member-submitted images. Critiques tend to be positive learning experiences for both submitters and the general audience. Participants discuss “why does this image work” as well as “why does this image not work” and how the image may be improved. Attendees also learn about the techniques involved.
