SUMMARY:Andres Alvarez: Quotidian Fire/El Fuego Cotidiano
DESCRIPTION:Andres Alvarez: Quotidian Fire/La Fiebre Cotidiana \nExhibit: October 3 – November 2\, 2023 \nReception: October 13\, 6 – 9 PM \n  \nAndres Alvarez is a peripatetic photographer whose realm is the street. He keeps an eye out for the absurdities of daily life\, pointing out ironies and contradictions\, while still celebrating the exuberance of living. He has largely focused his lens on the streets of Sacramento\, documenting the cultural celebrations\, practices\, and daily life of the diverse people who live in the region. His careful attention to the formal elements and the beauty of color is always present\, even as he captures the conflict and economic disparity present in our own backyard.  \n  \nConversation with the Artist \nOctober 29\, 4 – 5:30 PM (FREE\, $10 donation suggested) \n  \nAndres Alvarez joins Pence Director Natalie Nelson in conversation\, as they discuss his influences\, his method of capturing subjects\, and how photography contributes to a larger dialogue about our current political and social realities.  \n  \nThis exhibit is generously sponsored by Helen Richardson. \n  \nImage: photograph by Andres Alvarez \n

SUMMARY:Michael Mikolon: Garments
DESCRIPTION:Michael Mikolon: Garments \nExhibit: October 6 – November 26\, 2023 \nReception: October 13\, 6 – 9 PM \n  \nVisit the Pence Gallery to view a new exhibit upstairs featuring art by Michael Mikolon. As a resident of Northern California\, Mikolon finds inspiration in the diverse landscapes and cultures that surround him. This collection of drawings delves into the intricate relationship between clothing\, identity\, and the stories they carry. Clothing is more than just a functional necessity; it is a means of self-expression\, a reflection of culture\, and a vessel of memories and experiences. \n  \nGarments is a visual exploration of the intimate connection between clothing and the individuals who wear them. Each drawing depicts an item of clothing suspended delicately from a hanger against a blank wall\, inviting viewers to engage with the subtleties and complexities of each piece. Through the meticulous use of pastel and charcoal\, the artist has endeavored to capture not only the texture and materiality of the garments but also the essence of the person who might have worn them. \n  \nImage: drawing by Michael Mikolon \n

SUMMARY:Twilight
DESCRIPTION:Twilight \nExhibit: October 10 – December 1\, 2023 \nReception: October 13\, 6 – 9 PM \n  \nTwilight is the time of day when light fades\, marking that the day is done\, and darkness is impending. For artists\, more than simply a time of day\, twilight can function as a sort of in-between space\, opening boundaries between formerly distinct objects or ideas. In this liminal space four artists from Siskiyou County–Belinda Hanson\, Chris Clother\, Cathy Valentine\, and Carol Jenkins–working in distinctly different media\, address the very real changes they’ve encountered over the past three years. Through installations\, mixed media\, paintings\, and assemblage\, they address their relationship with nature\, light\, and the vagaries of life as they know it.  \n   \nArtist Talk via Zoom \nSaturday\, October 21\, 11 AM – 12:15 PM \nFree\, $10 donation suggested; To register\, visit www.pencegallery.org \n  \nEnjoy a talk via Zoom by the four artists exhibiting in Twilight\, as they share insights into their paintings and sculptures created since the pandemic. Working in different media\, they share an interest in using art to expand and comment upon the ever-changing environment and personal landscape. \n  \nImage: Belinda Hanson\, “They cut off my wing so I wouldn’t be so loud”

SUMMARY:Blanketed: New Paintings by Jack McTiernan
DESCRIPTION:Using a combination of materials\, Jack creates dynamic images that celebrate the beauty in everyday surroundings. “Blanketed” refers to his layering process\, beginning with a watercolor\, pastel and acrylic background applied with spray or airbrush. Hand-cut stencils and graphite produce a foreground which is finished with a layer of ink and a mixture of cold wax and oil paint.  Jack’s unique paintings highlight the beauty in shapes created by what mankind has manufactured to fill the landscape – buildings\, bridges; even streetlights and stop signs. \nThe Artery presents Blanketed with an Artery reception on Friday\, November 10\, 7-9 pm.  The artist will also have a Q & A from 11-Noon at the Artery on October 29.  In addition\, Jack opens his Davis studio from 4-6pm on November 17. \n  \n
