SUMMARY:Richard Gilewitz Guitar/Ukulele Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Internationally acclaimed fingerstyle guitarist Richard Gilewitz will appear live at The Melon Ball on Wednesday\, July 15\, 2026 as part of his album release tour supporting his tenth studio recording\, GILEWITZ. \nAre you a guitarist who’s always wanted to be in a band but never had the chance or thought you could be? Or are you already in a band and want more strategies and techniques to take your musicianship to the next level? Whatever your musical background\, this workshop is for you! As an experienced master class instructor\, Richard knows how to bring folks of varying levels of experience together so newer players never feel left out or confused\, and more advanced guitarists are never bored or restrained to slow down for the beginner. Under Richard’s direction\, we will ‘create a band’ on the spot with a combination of rhythms\, fingerpicking\, and a touch of music theory. You’ll learn how to: join and exit the group\, listen to yourself and each other\, vary your dynamic attack\, play with your eyes closed\, follow your breath\, and release body tension. He’ll also experiment with different instrumental voicings with the use of a capo to create a layered\, symphonic sound. You’ll leave the workshop knowing you gained valuable new skills and contributed to making some beautiful noise with others who love the guitar too. \nSkills Needed: Some experience with a few basic chords and strumming. Barre chords and fingerpicking are helpful but not required. \nWhat to Bring: A guitar. Optional but helpful: tuner\, capo\, pencil\, and paper. Handout materials will be provided. \nTeacher: Never one to settle for the boring or mundane\, Richard Gilewitz surprises audiences with his hilariously eccentric vision of the world and its inhabitants alongside breathtaking fingerstyle artistry on the 6- and 12-string guitar. Named one of the top fingerstyle guitarists of all time\, Richard invariably captivates listeners with uniquely emotional interpretations of romping knuckle busters and contemplative classical tunes reimagined for steel strings. He credits his ability to pull the deepest breath out of a tune to having studied for decades with a classical guitarist\, who was himself taught by a violinist who played alongside Albert Einstein. That is Richard in a nutshell…unusual\, unique\, surprising\, and a master of fingerstyle guitar.

SUMMARY:Adrian West Band Live
DESCRIPTION:Adrian West Band is a rising force in the Bay Area music scene. Based in Oakland\, the six-piece band plays original acoustic rock which they dub “Paul Simon meets Talking Heads”. A classically trained violinist who later turned to drums\, guitar and singing\, Adrian is a gifted composer and arranger. His lyrics\, which range from whimsical to philosophical\, ride atop a steady wave of catchy music. He always writes the music first and lyrics second\, only adding lyrics if he feels the music stands tall on its own. Fun fact: Paul Simon and David Byrne (of Talking Heads) work pretty much the same way. \nAdrian figured out a while ago that he likes having trained jazz musicians in his band. Jazz musicians bring technical chops and versatility. They know how to listen to each other and make a song flourish. And so to keep things interesting (for bandmembers and audience alike)\, the band also plays riveting renditions of cool Jazz standards — not the esoteric stuff\, but rather tunes with approachable melodies that even non-experienced Jazz listeners can enjoy. \nTo top it off\, the band throws in a rock cover or two … anything from Supertramp to Dolly Parton. \nThis concert will feature a six-piece ensemble\, bringing together some top Bay Area talent (musicians listed below). The rip-roaring solos of pianist Michael Echaniz are worth the price of admission alone. Their performance will take you to new heights fueled by vocal harmonies\, acoustic guitar\, electric violin\, piano\, alto sax\, upright bass\, drums and live looping. You will leave wanting more\, but knowing you’ve witnessed something new and special. \nBYOB! Visit www.adrianwest.com for more information including live performance videos and audio recordings. \nThe musicians:\nAdrian West – vocals\, acoustic guitar\, elec. violin & live looping\nLarisa Roberts – vocals\, percussion\nMichael Echaniz – piano\nChris Haag – alto sax\nAaron Germain – upright bass\nShawn Urbi-Tennie – drums \n$20 General Admission\n$15 Students (w/student ID\, in-store or at the door only)\nKids under 12 FREE\nShow starts at 8:00pm\nDoors open at 7:30pm
