SUMMARY:Learn to Meditate
DESCRIPTION:Join us for four Saturday mornings in September to learn a simple yet profound meditation practice that is grounded in the ancient Tibetan teachings of Shambhala.  Centered on the notion of basic goodness\, these teachings and practices are meant for times of joy and also times that are unsettling and difficult.  They describe how people can actually make use of tenderness\, sadness\, and fear to access an open awareness that is clear seeing\, steady and kind.  Each Saturday morning session (9-Noon) will include talks\, guided meditation instruction\, small discussion groups and a tea break.   All levels of practice welcome.   If you have an established meditation practice you will appreciate the retreat like environment and opportunity to meditate in community with what Suzuki Roshi called “beginner’s mind”.  The leader for the weekend is Lyle Larson who has been practicing and studying Buddhism and Shambhala paths since 1981. He is especially interested in  how these profound ancient teachings apply to everyday life in our highly polarized aggressive world. His latest path emphasis has been on applying the teachings and practices of simply being present and deep empathetic listening.

SUMMARY:Lama Lodu Rinpoche gives teachings on Calm Abiding and Insight Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Calm Abiding meditation\, also known as Shamatha\, is a Buddhist practice for developing mental clarity. Insight meditation\, also known as Vipassana\, is a practice that utilizes this mental clarity to develop clear insight into the true nature of reality. When both are practiced together with the motivation to benefit all sentient beings\, one gains temporary peace of mind and ultimately one progresses on the path to happiness for oneself and others. Based on these two topics\, if you want to further pursue Hinayana\, Mahayana and Vajrayana\, these teachings are a fundamental tool to further progression of all the states of Buddhism. \nLama Lodu Rinpoche is giving everyone a rare opportunity to receive these teachings. Whether Buddhist or non-Buddhist\, a senior practitioner or someone who is completely new to meditation\, everyone is invited to a weekend of public teachings hosted by KDK Sacramento. Although donations are welcome to support future events\, there is no fee – everyone is encouraged to attend. \nLama Lodu Rinpoche was appointed resident lama of Kagyu Droden Kunchab in San Francisco by His Eminence Kyabje Rangjung Kunkyab (the previous Kalu Rinpoche) and His Holiness the 16th Karmapa in 1976\, and since then has worked tirelessly to benefit sentient beings throughout the world. He has led multiple groups of Westerners on Three Year Retreats\, erected marble stupas\, and gives teachings at centers spanning the entire world\, from Hanoi\, Vietnam to St. Louis\, Missouri. His Holiness the 16th Gyalwang Karmapa once describe Lama Lodu Rinpoche as\, “a lama who has highly developed his inner practice.” Rinpoche’s teachings are clear\, unique and profound\, giving time for question and answers to clarify the student’s understanding and ensuring they have the full capability to engage with the practice and benefit not only themselves\, but all sentient beings.
