SUMMARY:Local Filmmakers Screen New Documentary Open Country
DESCRIPTION:Open Country(link is external) is a journey into the roots of American Country music\, reclaiming it as the creative musical expression of working people of all colors. Through archival clips\, contemporary interviews\, performances\, and animated graphics\, Open Country repositions country music into its rightful place as a people’s music. This film features interviews with Billy Bragg\, Mat Calahan\, Keith Cary\, Davey D\, Ryan Davidson\, Hazel Dickens\, Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz\, Alkali Flats\, Bairbre Flood\, Archie Green\, Gerald Haslam\, Toshio Hirano\, Roger Knox\, Jon Langford\, Hannah Mayree\, Morgan McDow\, George Metesky\, Yvonne Moore\, Pete Seeger\, Utah Phillips and Hilary Woodruff. \nThe filmmakers Glenda Drew and Jesse Drew are longtime advocates for grassroots community media\, and have been involved locally in Davis with the initial launch of KDRT community radio and with many initiatives for Davis Media Access.  We are thrilled to be partnering with them and the Davis Odd Fellows for this screening event Sunday\, March 10 from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.  More information is available  at their website Open Country(link is external). \nWe are very grateful that this event will also serve as a fundraiser for our grassroots radio station KDRT.  The filmmakers state “We are offering the film to community organizations\, down-home music venues\, alternative film spaces\, union halls\, and grassroots projects as a means to spread the word and to help you generate some funds and resources to continue doing the good work you do.”  \n

SUMMARY:Davis Odd Fellows Classic Film Fest
DESCRIPTION:Classic Hollywood cinema returns to the Odd Fellows Hall for a three-week run starting Sunday\, March 31\, 2024. Doors open at 6:30PM; Movie starts at 7PM\nThe Classic Film Festival Committee is coming up on three successive Sundays; March 31\, April 7 & April 14. The films are recommended by Film Critic/Reviewer Derrick Bang and selected by the committee. The genre for the upcoming Festival is “Movies which are much better than their remakes”. A real mouthful! Derrick will speak before each movie enlightening those attending on the plot\, director\, actors\, and fun things to look for while watching. He’ll do a quick Q&A afterwards.\nIt’s free of charge (although donations are always welcome to support classic films). Popcorn is provided free of charge. The Odd Fellows no-host bar is open. The musical duo According to Bazooka will play before each film. \nOn March 31st we’ll be showing the 1955 original version of “The Ladykillers” featuring Alec Guiness and Peter Sellers. \nApril 7th the 1960 classic featuring Rod Taylor\, “The Time Machine” \nApril 14th is the 1966 film that made Michael Caine a star\, “Alfie” \n
