DESCRIPTION:Ronald Peetz: Work in Progress \nExhibit: February 11 – April 2\, 2025 \nReception: February 14\, 6 – 9  PM (FREE) \nArtist Ronald Peetz has been a stalwart part of the regional art scene since the late 1960s. As an object maker and sculptor\, he delights in incorporating puns\, word play\, and irreverent humor into his work. Starting with his concept\, he chooses any one of the many media he employs\, to best make his idea come to life. In so doing\, his sculpture and mixed media pieces lean heavily towards social critique and parody\, blended with a lighter touch of humor and surrealism. Equally present is his interest in the history of art\, particularly his own 20th century inspirations\, from René Magritte and Marcel Duchamp\, to William T. Wiley\, one of his friends and mentors. \n  \nArtist Talk with Ronald Peetz \nMarch 15\, 1 – 2:30 PM (FREE\, $10 donation suggested) \nTalking with Ronald Peetz is much like his work – fun and full of humor. Peetz’s conceptual pieces are anything but dry\, as he uses materials such as baseballs\, violin cases\, and funerary headstones\, to underline his political and social messages. Night Market at the Pence \nEvent: June 13\, 6 – 9 PM \nApplication deadline: May 23\, 5 PM \n  \nThis pop-up market during the 2nd Friday ArtAbout invites young visual artists\, ages 16-25\, to display and sell their artwork inside the gallery\, ranging from prints and paintings\, to ceramics and jewelry\, and more. The Pence provides an indoor venue at $25/accepted artist (no fee for Pence Members!)\, which must be paid prior to the event. Artists must bring their own table to display their work\, but the Pence will provide chairs. All art sales are handled by participants\, and all proceeds go directly to the artist. Please note that space is limited\, and applications are due by 5 PM of May 23. This group is for both experienced artists and amateurs to have an opportunity to draw from the nude model. If you have never drawn from a live model before and would like to join us\, you are very welcome! People of all skill levels\, ages 18 and up\, are welcome and encouraged to join. \n  \nThis is not a class\, and no instruction is provided. The atmosphere is relaxed and non-competitive. Bring your own art materials\, and we’ll provide a comfortable place to sketch or paint live models in our upstairs classroom space. Participants will work independently through a warm up with shorter poses and longer\, twenty-minute poses. DESCRIPTION:Biophilia: Our Longing for Nature \nExhibit: April 11 – June 4\, 2025 \nReception: April 11\, 6 – 9 PM \n  \nArtists for millennia have reflected upon nature as the inspiration and subject of their work. Our affiliation with animals\, plants\, and the wild spaces of our world is defined as ‘biophilia\,’ or love for living things. Twentieth-century naturalist E.O. Wilson offered the theory that humans are ‘hard-wired’ to build a complex relationship with the natural world in his book Biophilia (1984). In our 21st century world\, the question is how do we build relationships with a natural world that is under threat from climate change\, habitat destruction\, and other forces? \n  \nParticipating artists in Biophilia look to scenes both intimate and overarching for an understanding of the elemental forces beyond man’s knowledge. They point to the power of the earth’s resources\, and our need to comprehend their use and power. Other artists in Biophilia turn to animals for their symbolic and cultural resonance. The simple practice of painting en plein air\, directly in natural environments\, offers a continuing record of our need to capture the ephemeral beauty of landscapes that skirt our largely urban existence. \n  \nParticipating artists include Elaine Bowers\, Patrick Cosgrove\, Mark Goudy\, William Ishmael\, Carol Jenkins\, Linda Clark Johnson\, Qinqin Liu\, Liza Riddle\, and Marsha Schindler. \n  \nThe Pence Gallery is open 11:30 AM – 5 PM\, Tuesday through Sunday (closed Mondays). \n  \nImage: Linda Clark Johnson\, “Heat Wave” \n
