Night Market at the Pence \nEvent: June 13\, 6 – 9 PM \nApplication deadline: May 23\, 5 PM \n  \nThis pop-up market during the 2nd Friday ArtAbout invites young visual artists\, ages 16-25\, to display and sell their artwork inside the gallery\, ranging from prints and paintings\, to ceramics and jewelry\, and more. It’s free to apply!  \n  \nArtists who are interested in participating must fill out an online application. The Pence provides an indoor venue at $25/accepted artist (no fee for Pence Members!)\, which must be paid prior to the event. Artists must bring their own table to display their work\, but the Pence will provide chairs. All art sales are handled by participants\, and all proceeds go directly to the artist. Please note that space is limited\, and applications are due by 5 PM of May 23. SUMMARY:Biophilia: Our Longing for Nature
DESCRIPTION:Biophilia: Our Longing for Nature \nExhibit: April 11 – June 4\, 2025 \nReception: April 11\, 6 – 9 PM \n  \nArtists for millennia have reflected upon nature as the inspiration and subject of their work. Our affiliation with animals\, plants\, and the wild spaces of our world is defined as ‘biophilia\,’ or love for living things. Twentieth-century naturalist E.O. Wilson offered the theory that humans are ‘hard-wired’ to build a complex relationship with the natural world in his book Biophilia (1984). In our 21st century world\, the question is how do we build relationships with a natural world that is under threat from climate change\, habitat destruction\, and other forces? \n  \nParticipating artists in Biophilia look to scenes both intimate and overarching for an understanding of the elemental forces beyond man’s knowledge. They point to the power of the earth’s resources\, and our need to comprehend their use and power. Other artists in Biophilia turn to animals for their symbolic and cultural resonance. The simple practice of painting en plein air\, directly in natural environments\, offers a continuing record of our need to capture the ephemeral beauty of landscapes that skirt our largely urban existence. \n  \nParticipating artists include Elaine Bowers\, Patrick Cosgrove\, Mark Goudy\, William Ishmael\, Carol Jenkins\, Linda Clark Johnson\, Qinqin Liu\, Liza Riddle\, and Marsha Schindler. \n  \nThe Pence Gallery is open 11:30 AM – 5 PM\, Tuesday through Sunday (closed Mondays). \n  \nImage: Linda Clark Johnson\, “Heat Wave” \n

View local artists Leslie Allen\, Patrick Cosgrove\, Raquel Cox\, Karen Fess\, Marlene Lee\, and Barbara Smithson as they paint outdoors in the gardens. At the Pence\, enjoy three stunning art exhibits by regional artists\, a free snack bag (limited to the first 150 people)\, and a quick tour at 2 PM by our Director of the Biophilia exhibit. The Garden Tour is a major fundraising event that supports the mission of the Pence Gallery\, a nonprofit art organization that serves the community through exhibits and programs promoting the work of local and regional artists. \n  \nTickets will be available for purchase starting April 4: \nGarden Tour tickets are $25 for Members\, $30 for Non-Members\, and $35 the day of the event. Through the process of art making\, participants will have opportunities for discussion\, education\, and connecting with peers in a safe and supportive space in the Pence Learning Center under the guidance of facilitators Amy Vidra and Lyndsey Rocca.  \n  \nREGISTRATION ONLINE IS REQUIRED IN ADVANCE\, and space is limited to the first 8 participants who register. Participants must be 18 or older\, and no art experience is necessary.
