Imagining America (IA) advances public scholarship on pressing social issues, campus culture change to support civically engaged learning, and regional campus-community organizing through the creative methodologies of the arts, design, and the humanities. As a national consortium of university, college, and community partners, IA connects, convenes, and promotes public scholars, artists, designers, and cultural organizers who harness the power of radical imagination to foster deep human connections and advance a more equitable and thriving democracy. Launched at the University of Michigan in 1999, IA is currently based out of the University of California, Davis.
IA seeks an Associate Director of Membership and Development, a key position that works with IA’s Faculty Director and Managing Director to strengthen the IA consortium and to secure financial resources to support IA’s work. Major responsibilities of the position include conducting research and analysis required to set annual membership and contributed income goals, implementing IA’s fundraising plan, cultivating new and existing relationships with members, donors, and other key constituents, designing and supporting initiatives providing value to members, and developing, implementing, and maintaining internal systems using existing and new technologies for tracking constituent information.
The Associate Director reports to the Managing Director, working closely with the Managing Director and Faculty Director to achieve membership and development goals.
The Associate Director of Membership and Development serves a key role in strengthening the IA consortium and in securing financial resources to support IA’s work. The Associate Director assesses, develops, and implements IA’s membership model, including leading member recruitment and engagement. In partnership with the Faculty Director and Managing Director, the Associate Director works to strategically grow contributed revenue.
Key responsibilities include conducting research and analysis required to set annual membership and contributed income goals, implementing IA’s fundraising plan, cultivating new and existing relationships with members, donors, and other key constituents, designing and supporting initiatives providing value to members, and developing, implementing, and maintaining internal systems using existing and new technologies for tracking constituent information.
The Associate Director generates high-level strategy materials, including proposals, presentations, and other member and development documents needed to support the Managing Director, Faculty Director, and National Advisory Board.
Bachelor’s degree in related area, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Expertise in one or more of the following areas: arts and culture field; civic engagement within higher education and campus-community partnerships; equity, inclusion, and diversity movements within higher education; community cultural development from a not-for-profit perspective.
Knowledge of principles, best practices, and trends in membership and fundraising.
Experience designing and executing member recruitment, engagement, and/or fundraising strategies with demonstrated success in meeting membership targets and/or securing foundation grant support.
Interpersonal and communications skills to build and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups.
Professional experience and political acumen to handle sensitive or difficult situations diplomatically, to represent high level executives with tact and discretion.
Writing and editing skills to produce compelling and effective messaging.
Organizational and time management skills to achieve progress on multiple simultaneous tasks, meet deadlines, and establish goals and workload priorities with flexibility and shift strategies mid-stream as program needs and goals shift.
Master’s degree in related area, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of IA and its vision, mission, values, goals, successes, and challenges.
Experience working with higher education institutions such as research universities, land-grants, Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs), tribal colleges, community colleges, liberal arts colleges, and arts/design schools.
Critical thinking and analytical skills to recognize potential areas of constituency concern and to address, resolve and/or mitigate problems or issues.
Experience using constituent relationship management software. Advanced skills in MS Office 365 Suite.
