A cross between the viola da gamba and lirone, with 10 resonating and plucked strings down the back of the instrument, the baryton gives the traditional string trio an entirely new dimension. 12:05p—1p. FOX RIVER TRAIN. Santa’s elves will be on board the train to guide passengers in holiday sing-a-longs, elfish games, and fun festive activities. JACKSON HALL. At the center of this concert is a new composition for wind ensemble by Sacramento-based composer Shuying Li titled “Luminance,” which the UC Davis Concert Band helped commission thanks to the Rucker Family Trust’s Endowed Fund for Concert Band Support. Through its use of evocative tonalities and dynamic contrasts, “Luminance” aims to inspire audiences to find strength in moments of darkness and embrace the light within themselves. 7p—9p. Free
